WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee joined a bipartisan bill to help halt the flow of illicit fentanyl from Mexico, China and other nations around the world into the United States. The International Narcotics Trafficking Emergency Response by Detecting Incoming Contraband with Technology (INTERDICT) Act would provide U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) tools such as hi-tech chemical screening devices to help detect and interdict fentanyl and other illicit synthetic opioids.
“The INTERDICT Act is an important step in combating the opioid crisis by restricting the flow of illicit fentanyl that is trafficked into the United States,” Kaine said. “The bill would ensure that U.S. Customs and Border Protection has the resources necessary to intercept and block the unlawful importation of fentanyl.”

So, this holiday season, wouldn’t it be nice to give back to them the gift of life? The gift of life in the form of food, water, shelter and a house to raise their young. Because the dozens of wild bird species in your backyard give to us all year long. They ask for nothing. But as we remove more and more of their wild habitat, they are stressed to survive. Stressed to find food. Stressed to find water to drink and bathe. Stressed to find habitat to roost in during the colder months of the year. And stressed to find a safe habitat to raise their young.
Don’t get me wrong. Colorful silly ties, chewy healthy Fruit Cake and electronic gizmos are fun to open on Chanukah, Christmas and Kwanza. But the tie will only be worn twice in the year. The electronic gizmo will be broken before nightfall. And you better not keep the Fruit cake more than a week! But a bird feeder is a gift of life that will last for years and years. Which each passing season, you will be helping the wild birds to survive and sustain themselves. You will also be giving the wonderful gift of “the hobby of bird feeding” to someone. The joys of discovering the natural world all around us is never ending. With the four seasonal changes, comes new birds, colors and songs. An awareness to being observational as to which bird species visits and or live in your yard becomes more focused with each day, week and month. Before you know it, you have given someone a lifetime worth of magic. And it all started with one simple gift of a bird feeder and some food.
Headed out the door to the holiday party without a gift for the host? Looking for something inexpensive but adorable for that white elephant gift exchange? Bistro 360 is your answer, and it’s right around the corner.
More than a full-service restaurant and international wine bar, Bistro 360, located at 1800 Wilson Boulevard, is also a convenient market stocked with fresh baked breads, pre-made salads, cheese, charcuterie, gourmet sweets and craft beers but also whimsical-but-practical stocking stuffers. Here are three:
Food is the most essential element, providing birds with the energy, stamina and nutrition they need. To stay warm, birds will expend energy very quickly, some losing up to 10% of their body weight on extremely cold nights. An ample supply of high-calorie foods, such as black oil sunflower seeds, peanuts and suet can be crucial to a bird’s survival.
“We can play a vital role during cold conditions,” said Michael Zuiker, owner of the Arlington Wild Birds Unlimited. “At these times, a reliable supply of food can mean the difference between life and death for a bird.” If you think of birds as little flying furnaces, you understand that they need fuel to keep the fire burning throughout the night. High fat foods in the form of Oil Sunflower seeds, nuts and suets give the birds the fuel they need.

Pros:
You come for the wine tasting, you stay for the dinner.
That was our experience one Thursday night at Bistro 360, the three-year-old wine bar that splits the difference between Courthouse and Rosslyn. We came for a wine tasting in the hopes of discovering new flavors, but we also stumbled onto one of the best food values in Arlington.
