WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA) and U.S. Representatives Bobby Scott (D-VA-03), Don Beyer (D-VA-08), Jennifer McClellan (D-VA-04), Eugene Vindman (D-VA-07), Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA-10), and James Walkinshaw (D-VA-11) released the following statement:
“The rise in political violence—which has inflicted tragedy upon the families of Republican activist Charlie Kirk and Minnesota’s House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, a Democrat, and her husband Mark, and many other Americans on both sides of the aisle—is disturbing and unacceptable. We are unified in our condemnation of these attacks. It is critical to the safety of all Americans and the health of our democracy that we are able to approach our political differences with respect and without resorting to violence.”
August 28, 2025 (Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Don Beyer (D-VA), who serves on the House Committee on Ways and Means, which has jurisdiction over health care, issued the following statement today after Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s attacks on vaccine science and public health prompted the attempted firing of Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Director Susan Monarez and the departures of other key CDC leaders:
“President Trump must fire Robert F. Kennedy Jr. before he further endangers millions of American children, mothers, and families. If Trump does not remove Kennedy before this kook fully unleashes his crackpot conspiracy theories on America’s vaccination efforts, Trump will bear the responsibility for the unnecessary and preventable illnesses and deaths that result.
ARLINGTON, VA, August 20, 2025 – The Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC), in collaboration with True Ground Housing Partners and Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC), has opened a new public food distribution site in Arlington’s Westover neighborhood to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. This initiative enables access to free, supplemental groceries for Arlington residents in an area where access to food assistance is limited.
Located in True Grounds’ Fisher House apartments (5705 Washington Blvd, Arlington VA 22205), the new site opens alongside AHC to extend AFAC’s resources to residents of multiple low-income housing properties in the area. This development aims to alleviate transportation challenges for food insecure residents living in Westover and increase access to nutritious food for individuals who may have previously relied on deliveries.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After videos circulated online of federal police officers using excessive force to make arrests as part of President Trump’s unnecessary and inflammatory surge of law enforcement in D.C., Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and Congressman Don Beyer (D-VA) announced that they’ll reintroduce their bill to require all federal police officers, including those from Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Park Police, to wear body cameras and use dashboard cameras in marked vehicles when Congress returns in September.

August 19, 2025 (Washington, D.C.) – The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) today reported that the unemployment rate in Virginia rose again in July, to 3.6 percent, the seventh consecutive increase in the Commonwealth’s unemployment rate. Virginia’s 0.8 percent year-over-year unemployment rate increase is now the second fastest in the nation during that period, tied with Oregon and trailing only Mississippi. In the past 50 years, Virginia’s unemployment rate has only risen this sharply six times, all preceding or during nationwide recessions.
Virginia’s labor force participation rate (LFPR) declined in July, to 64.9 percent. Labor force participation in Virginia has declined every month since January, and 2025 has already seen the Commonwealth’s sharpest LFPR decline since the early months of the pandemic.

“Donald Trump has personally incited more crime in Washington D.C. than perhaps anyone else living. He pardoned the violent criminals who attacked our Capitol on January 6th and put them back in American communities. He even made a man who was filmed urging the crowd to kill D.C. police officers a senior adviser at the Justice Department.
WASHINGTON – As Virginians continue to struggle to pay their rising electricity bills, U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA) are pushing back against the Trump administration’s plans to terminate a program designed to lower energy costs and support the deployment of affordable solar power to communities hardest hit by skyrocketing costs.
Today’s letter to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin and Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Russell Vought follows reporting that the EPA is preparing to terminate $7 billion in funding for the Solar for All program, which helps expand access to solar power and storage for low- to middle-income communities across the country. The program is expected to provide access to solar for over 900,000 households and save participating households approximately $400 a year on their electricity bills. The Commonwealth of Virginia was awarded $156 million under Solar for All that will be used to support the installation of nearly 100 megawatts of residential solar to power more than 15,400 households in Virginia while creating nearly 2,000 solar-related jobs, including approximately 1,200 direct jobs that will help support the burgeoning solar industry in Virginia.
RICHMOND, VA — Governor Glenn Youngkin and Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) announced today that Virginia’s tourism industry generated a record high $35.1 billion in visitor spending in 2024, marking a 5.4% increase from $33.3 billion in 2023. Overnight visitation to Virginia increased by over one million people to 44.7 million visitors in 2024, up from 43.6 million in 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic levels for the first time and setting a new record.
“In 2024, a record-breaking one million additional overnight visitors chose Virginia, drawn by our unmatched beauty, rich heritage, and welcoming communities,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “Those visitors traveled from farther away, stayed longer, and spent more, generating a record $35.1 billion in direct spending. This unprecedented level of economic activity not only supports hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs and strengthens local businesses, but it also generates crucial state and local tax revenues that help ease the tax burden for Virginia families. When visitors choose Virginia, they’re not just taking a trip, they’re investing in our economy, our workforce, and our future.”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, (D-VA) joined a bipartisan group of Senate colleagues in introducing the College Transparency Act (CTA), legislation to ensure students and families have better information as they consider higher education opportunities. The CTA would modernize the college reporting system for postsecondary data by providing accurate reporting on student outcomes such as enrollment, completion, and post-college earnings across colleges and majors.
“For many Virginians, higher education is one of the best investments for one’s future, and it’s vital that students and families have accurate information about student outcomes before choosing the right school and program for them,” said Kaine. “I’m proud to join colleagues from both sides of the aisle to introduce the College Transparency Act to ensure our college reporting system is up to date and able to provide Virginians with the most important information as they make this life-changing decision.”
