Sierra Club Virginia Chapter Endorses Erik Gutshall in the Democratic Caucus for the Arlington County Board

The Sierra Club is endorsing Erik Gutshall running in the Democratic Caucus on May 9, 11 and 13, for the Arlington County Board.

We are pleased to announce our endorsement of Mr. Gutshall based on his clear understanding of the broad range of environmental issues facing the County, including energy and sustainability, transportation, development and smart growth, green space, and recycling. “In making our endorsement, we recognize Mr. Gutshall’s extensive background in environmental policy and energy related issues in Arlington. He has demonstrated a clear, in-depth understanding of those issues and has expressed innovative views on how to meet those challenges,” said Dean Amel, Chair of the local Mount Vernon Group of the Sierra Club. Mr. Gutshall has a detailed understanding of the Community Energy Plan and fully supports the Arlington Initiative to Rethink Energy (AIRE). He sees a future that has opportunities for our County to sustain and improve our environment. He calls the goal of moving Arlington to 100% renewable energy by 2035 “very achievable” and supports energy efficiency initiatives in both the County government and schools.

Mr. Gutshall is an advocate for long-term planning to achieve smart growth goals, including those to reach County affordable housing targets. He supports effective mass transit, from Metro to ART buses, and is well known for advocating bike and pedestrian improvements. Mr. Gutshall also has a detailed, six-part, strategy for preserving and expanding green space in Arlington. He supports ambitious actions to maintain the leadership on environmental issues and tangible results that our County has become known for nationwide.
