Firefighters from Arlington and neighboring jurisdictions battled a major house fire in the Country Club Hills neighborhood Sunday afternoon.
The blaze was reported just after 1 p.m. amid heavy rain and at least one nearby lightning strike, though the cause of the fire is not currently known. Arriving firefighters found heavy smoke coming from a house set well back from the street.
A family safely got out after the attic of their home in the Country Club Hills neighborhood caught fire this morning.
Firefighters were first dispatched to the house on the 4600 block of 35th Street N. around 9:15 a.m. to investigate a burning light fixture and a haze on the second floor, according to scanner traffic. Arriving units reported smoke coming from the roof and asked for the call to be upgraded and additional resources to be dispatched.
About 1,100 homes and businesses in Arlington are without power on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
The main outage, encompassing Country Club Hills and other North Arlington neighborhoods near Marymount University, was reported around lunchtime Saturday.
A teenager with a concealed handgun was taken into custody at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City mall yesterday afternoon.
The arrest does not appear to have a direct connection to the inauguration, though it took place on Inauguration Day as police were on high alert for possible security threats.
The Old Glebe Civic Association is eyeing an expansion, planning to scoop up a few additional streets from neighboring Country Club Hills.
The group is currently hoping to add about three blocks to its boundaries, targeting homes that aren’t currently part of any civic association. Arlington County Police are investigating a home invasion robbery in the Country Club Hills neighborhood, just north of Marymount University.
Police say three men, armed with guns and wearing white gloves, forced their way inside a house on 33rd Street N. The home invasion happened after one of the residents returned home around 3 a.m. this past Saturday.
