Those concerned about the current situation at, and potential future uses of, a county-owned parcel on North Quincy Street now have an Arlington County Board member to directly reach out to.

Susan Cunningham on Sept. 17 was announced as the board’s liaison between the community and staff on plans surrounding the 6.1-acre parcel, located east of Washington-Liberty High School and currently used for storage of Arlington Transit (ART) buses.

Members of the Arlington County government’s Housing Commission have opted to hold off and await political developments at the state level before considering proposals that Virginia localities be empowered to impose rent-control measures on landlords.

Well, technically not “rent control,” but “rent stabilization” – a slightly more watered-down incarnation that gives local governments the power to regulate the amount of rent increases but not set absolute caps on what landlords can charge.

It may not quite be unique, but it’s still extraordinary to have three generations of a family involved with a local service organization.

Not only have three succeeding generations stayed active over nearly 80 years with the Arlington Optimist Club, but if things turn out right, down the road a fourth potentially could be added.

That comes after the office of Commonwealth’s Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti (D) received the same information from election officials several weeks ago.

The Arlington County government’s plan for a pilot “microtransit” effort won support at a recent advisory-subcommittee meeting. But it also faced flak over where it will be conducted.

“I’m just sort of flabbergasted,” said Kent Keyser, a member of the accessibility subcommittee of the Arlington Transit Advisory Committee, after hearing that the pilot will take place in what he termed the “next to the wealthiest” section of the county. (The wealthiest being areas in far northwest Arlington just to the north of the proposed service area.)

Members of the Housing Commission in September voted to include the proposal on a list of priorities for consideration by the County Board in advance of the 2025 General Assembly session.

And according to new data, one or more of those headwinds is, if not holding back prospective purchasers entirely, at least putting roadblocks in their way.
