Arlington County Police have released surveillance video from the botched armed robbery of the 7-Eleven store near the intersection of Columbia Pike and S. George Mason Drive.

The robbery attempt happened at about 3:25 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19.

The video shows an approximately 5’8″ tall white male enter the store wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a bandana over his face, while pointing a handgun at the store clerk. A second suspect, a 5’7″ tall black male in a white v-neck t-shirt, then enters the store behind the first suspect and appears to throw some sort of firecracker.

The fireworks made a loud bang and startled the suspects, the clerk later told police, and the two men ran from the scene empty-handed. Arlington police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspects.

“Anyone with information on the identities of these individuals is asked to contact Detective John Donaggio at 703.228.4167 or investigations@arlingtonva.us,” a police press release said. “To report information anonymously, contact the Arlington County Crime Solvers at 866.411.TIPS (8477).”

    Fear the Firecracker!

  • Greg

This looks like a prank. A really stupid one, but still… I think this is two kids who were trying to scare this guy.

    • KLB

If it was a prank, it would have been a much better idea to not have a gun.

    • Ben

Eh – I don’t think so. Looks like the firecracker was meant to spook the attendant (act like they shot or something) and ended up just scaring the guy holding the gun.

      • Greg

That’s what I mean. It looks like the fire cracker was supposed to make the clerk think they were shooting.

They both booked it out of there when the firecracker went off like it was planned.

  • Gogogaryo

That is awesomely stupid. I’ll tell you where you won’t find them… School. What’s a 7-11 going to have at 3am? $20? $30 with a roll of quarters?

    • Not Me

      Funny and true!

    illin

  • NoVapologist

    That’s burglarious!

  • Greg

    Dumb.

  • drax

    WTF?

One guy is fully covered and the other’s face is showing? They don’t enter at the same time?

Looks more like a bystander threw a firecracker to scare the burglar. Though that’s weird too.

  • ballsteve

Was this in Fairlington? Stuff like this always happens there.

      like

    • Eamon De Valera

No, this was just outside the border of Fairlington. Don’t slander Fairlington

    • SHLady

      *golf clap*

  • John Fontain

Looks to me like the guy with the gun mistook the firecracker explosion for someone firing a gun at him and then turned to run.

    • nerf

I think that’s what happened. I bet something fired out his backside at the same time.

      • P. Monroe

        HA!

  • Who Cares

Who cares if they were pulling a prank or what their motive was. The guy pointed what we have to assume is a loaded gun at the clerk.
The punishment for blatantly threatening someones life should be the death sentence.

And que the comments about living in a communist society etc…

    • ArLater

I am with you. Why do we need these wastes of lives? What benefit are they providing/ will they ever provide to anyone or anything?

(Besides providing amusement of their stupidity while I am at work, of course)

  • D’oh

Hey! That guy with the firecracker is a hero! He stopped the robbery!

    • bum

      Always be prepared. Carry firecrackers.

  • RightWingWhacko

I’m gonna offer the firecracker idea to Wayne LaPierre of the NRA. It might make his job a little easier.

  • Dezlboy

I think they were together. Why would a bystander just happen to have a firecracker and the (non)sense to light it? I assume the smoke did not come from the firing of the gun? Do blank guns shoot blank? or just make smoke? Are there smoke guns?

    • sunflower

and why would a bystander run away if he was trying to help?

  • Jake_O

These two are clearly brain surgeons and used their education to the fullest extent possible.

  • Earth Mover

I’m gonna give you to the count of 10, to get your ugly, yella, no-good keister off my property, before I pump your guts full of lead!

  • Buckingham Bandit

I occasionally stop at that 7-11 on the way home from my girlfriend’s place late on weekends (to her chagrin).

The guy who is always there on late-night weekends (I am assuming it is him, the man in the video looks like him) is a South Asian man, and very nice and friendly. He will often give me multiple donuts for free, as I think he is looking to get rid of that day’s inventory.

Yes, you can free-fire with all the snark you want about eating 7-11 donuts.

  • Joe

I think the second guy was the leader of the two. The first guy was worried about being identified so he covered up with a mask and hood. He looks like a wanna be thug. I think the second guy was pushing him to shoot the clerk so he would have that over him for blackmail control. The second guy threw the firecracker so the pop would cause the guy with the gun to panic and fire the gun he had. I don’t think it was a prank at all. Or I could be totally wrong.

I think a scared criminal with a gun is more dangerous since he is unpredictable.

  • Dude Where’s My Car

Pretty sure that is not how “breech, bang, clear” is supposed to work.

    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=breach%20bang%20and%20clear

though in this case the flashbang did clear the room of “hostiles,” soooo….

  • YTK

This 7-11 is in a high crime area. This area needs a satellite police station. They have/had one in Landmark Mall – they need one here
