Car Flips on Roof Near Bishop O’Connell High

by ARLnow.com | March 21, 2013 at 4:45 pm | 4,727 views | 50 Comments

A car flipped its roof near Bishop O’Connell High School this afternoon.

The accident occurred at the four-way intersection of N. Van Buren Street, 28th Street N. and N. Little Falls Road, one block away from Bishop O’Connell in the East Falls Church neighborhood. The one-vehicle wreck ended with the four-door Saab on its roof and a street sign ripped from the ground.

There appeared to be at least two male occupants of the car, both of whom were high school students. No injuries were reported.

Hmm, I believe Saabs are even offered with manual transmissions so this COULD be the first ever exception to the rule. MAYBE.

That’s a tricky intersection back in there. I flipped my car several times there back in high school.

I’m guessing it was someone more like this.

I used to drive my D Sports racer (Elva Courier) down that street many times.

    Volvo’s are very safe vehicles.

    • Nenderbent

So safe that they weren’t even involved in this accident…

  • Eric

Good thing it didn’t take out a $1,000,000 super bus stop. MD tags? I can’t tell.

      • Virginia_Girl

Really, you know this for sure?

        • me

          yes, i was riding shotgun.

  • Grounded4Life

Um…mom…please don’t tell Dad! I swear I was not speeding, a squirrel ran out in front of me.

  • Arlingtron

Oh look. Another accident with an expensive import vehicle by young people who can’t buy (much less control) on one on their own.

    • dave

That’s a 2002 Saab 9-3. It’s no longer expensive and it has a 2 liter turbo which is less power than you’ll find on a modern accord. Settle down champ

      • ARL

More expensive than a 2002 Ford minivan though.

  • me

There were four passengers in the car, i know because i was riding shotgun. And yes we are all complete idiots for this, none of us got hurt and we are extremely thankful for that and more importantly for the fact that nobody else got hurt. I would really appreciate it if this were taken down because this incident has cause lots of problems within the 4 hour span of events (and yes I do realize that we deserve whatever trouble we caused).

    • Arlington Chris

I’m glad you guys are okay, and also that you didn’t hurt any bystanders. Consider this a good lesson, perhaps?

      • me

        yeah, we definitely are.

    • http://twitter.com/poseidonguy1 PoseidonGuy

Nah. I think when taxpayer resources–police, fire, EMS–have to be expended because people decide to be “complete idiots,” it’s worth knowing about since we get stuck with the bill. Your name and face weren’t shown–you should be thankful for that.

      • http://twitter.com/Dezlboy Dezlboy

FWIW: If an ambulance was called, the injured person is billed. From my experience it’s about $600. The county does not pick up the tab.

        • http://twitter.com/poseidonguy1 PoseidonGuy

          1. Injured person is only billed if they’re transported.
          2. If injured person is uninsured and doesn’t pay, taxpayers do.
          3. Taxpayer still pays for Police / Sheriff / Fire response.
          4. Taxpayers also “pay” in the sense that the ambulance is not available to those who have an injury or illness unrelated to stupidity.

          • Suburban Not Urban

And the 600 doesn’t cover the cost, it’s really just a charge to make sure that people use the service with respect.

    • Virginia_Girl

Well if the driver were going near the speed limit or not goofing off this would not have happened. Taken down? Should have thought of that before your actions caused this. You all deserve a kick in the but and grounding.

      Glad you are okay.

      • me

kick in the ass and groundings happened, but one of our friends got kicked out of his house.

        • http://twitter.com/Dezlboy Dezlboy

Umm….not sure what the rollover has to do with being kicked out of house, but doesn’t sound like a good situation. Best of luck to all of you.
          And…readers, stuff happens.

          • me

it more or less does. my friend gets a’s an b’s, doesnt do any of the stupid teenager partying stuff, doesnt get in trouble at school, listens to his parents, does everything he is asked with out question, but his father is an abusive ass and was more or less looking for a reason to kick him out….

          • http://twitter.com/Dezlboy Dezlboy

Please watch out for him and ensure he has a place to stay. If need be have him contact ArlCo Social Services for his own health and well-being.

          • Responsibility

Maybe because he was in trouble for rolling over a car while partying with his friends because he did not listen to his parents who thought he should have been home or at school studying to work up to his potential and be a productive citizen. And, after seeing that all were physically okay, the parents are furious over what could have happened and the cost they will have to incur for court costs, vehicle damage, emergency response, because the kid is a kid and does not have a way to pay for all of the above.

          • Lisa

Calling your friend’s dad what you did in this public forum is another complete idiot move. Learn to control yourself, and grow up.

        • flux

What’s done is done. Find a way to help your friend and don’t worry about some article.

        • JLB

Glad nobody was hurt. Now the more important question: did you get Officer Lefty there’s digits?

    • Arlingtron

If you were indeed involved I am glad you are OK. I’ve seen the aftermath of many car accidents. Roll-overs look spectacular but usually result in fewer injuries than other head-on or t-bone collisions. I am sure your driver had a lot of culpability in this accident. His inexperience combined with distractions (possibly from you and your friends?) possibly led up to his inability to control this vehicle properly. You were lucky.

So why were you complete idiots? And no, Arlnow will not take this down. Public humiliation is a part of the process, especially when public resources are needed and that more than your feelings could have been hurt.

There is a reason why parents and some states forbid unrelated passengers. If you really need a ride next time get in the car and shut up. Your driver must buckle up, turn off the radio, power down the mobile phone, stop talking, and drive. His life, yours, and others’ depends on it.

Ahh, the good old days. I still remember sitting in my class at O’Connell one day in the 70s, only to look up and see my brother driving our family’s powder blue Plymouth Fury station wagon back and forth in front of the school, assorted friends mooning us from the passenger and back seats. Good times! But he didn’t flip it. There’s that, at least.

  • bobbytiger

I don’t know officer, it just flipped over.

  • Virginia_Girl

What is it about Arlington and cars ending up on their roofs? It happens often.

    • Gallileo

It is because of how far the county leans to the left……

No story here; kids probably got a ride home from Arlington County. Thank goodness it was not DWB.

To the driver and passenger, I’m glad you weren’t hurt. I’m also glad you took responsibility for what happened. To the other adults who left snarky comments, be glad that the internet and boards like these weren’t around when you were teenagers, and whatever snide comments neighbors made about you weren’t posted for the world to see for posterity. I’m in my 50s now, did some stupid things as a teenager, learned my lesson from accidents and incidents which could’ve been tragic, and hope our community’s youth will be as lucky as I was while navigating their teenage years.
