President Obama’s motorcade sped through Arlington this morning, en route to an appearance at Northern Virginia Community College’s Alexandria campus.

There, the president will announce a series of initiatives intended to improve the country’s manufacturing workforce. He will also tour NOVA’s automotive training program.

Mister Obama is currently on the campus. He is expected to return to the White House by 12:30 p.m.

  • How dare he commute through Arlington on his way to Alexandria. Doesn’t he realize outsider commuters are not welcome here?

    • doodly

Arlington County strongly supported building Metro. Outside commuters are hardly unwelcome.

    • wilbur

N’ah – that’s just people from Fairfax and Loudon. We like our friends from Alexandria.

      • Stu Pendus

They hate Prince William County too.

        • Shirlyyoujest

Don’t forget Loudon. Sometimes they get lost…

          • Wilson

            People–it’s LOUDOUN.

“Mister Obama”? Shouldn’t he be addressed as “President Obama”?

    • DCDirtDog

Actually it is perfectly acceptable to refer to the President as “Mister Obama” as long as he is referred to as “President Obama” earlier in the article. “Mister” is a title of respect and it would only be disrespectful of the President if you referred to him without any title. This has been the practice since our first President.

      • Well…

That’s true, though it’s odd that the word is spelled out. Unless referring to Mr. Mister.

        • Josh S

I noticed that right away, too. You never see Mister spelled out. Odd. Wonder what it means…..

          • CW

Only certain people deserve to have it spelled out; those include Mister Obama and Mister Days.

          • doodly

            And Mister Mister.

He also passed through briefly on Memorial Day. Saw his motorcade coming and going as they used the Roosevelt Bridge and past Iwo Jima to get to Arlington Cemetery.

  • BoredHouseWife

He must like South Arlington. He comes here a lot!

    • FedUp

      So do I.

Also announced the Department of Education will start using SWAT teams to find people who owe money on their student loans —

    Great job Arne & Barry!

Bit o trivia: Do you know how to spot that the motorcade is the President’s and not the Veep or some dignitary? (if you don’t easily recognize his limo)

There is always an ambulance in the President’s motorcade.

    • Foolish Consistency

When Cheney was veep there was a mobile emergency room in his motorcade…….

  • Dave

Did Arlington not have enough time to file a Federal Lawsuit to block the movement through the county?

  • APSnumberone

I don’t like the use of “Mister Obama.” He’s the president; call him “President Obama.”

    • DCDirtDog

The article does refer to him as “President Obama.” It’s actually the first thing the author wrote. It’s only later in the article that the author refers to him as “Mister Obama.” This is a perfectly acceptable way to refer to a U.S. President and the practice goes back to our Founding Fathers.

And I agree with the previous comments that it is a little strange to spell out “Mister.”

      • ArlingtonNative

The spelling out of “Mister” is appropriate as it is the first word in the sentence, same as if you were writing Doctor as the first word, one would spell it out vs. the abbreviation of Dr.
If you are mid-sentence, then using Mr. (or Dr., etc.) would be appropriate.

You can tell when it’s the President’s motorcade downtown because they block off the cross streets along the route.

  • MC 703

I was driving back from Tysons last night around 10:30 and a big motorcade was heading out to Dulles on the connector road. 15+ motorcycles, black SUVs with strobes and big limos with strobes. All in all about 30 vehicles heading onto the Dulles Connector road off of 66W.

Wonder who it was if VP and POTUS were in town today. Or were they???

    • South Arlington

POTUS and VPOTUS wouldn’t be using Dulles, they use Andrews Air Force Base. It might have been a foreign head of state. Or Charlie Sheen.

      • JohnW

Yup, most likely Merkel. Prolly headed home to Europe. The Germans also have a military compound at Dulles.

i got a notice today from City of Alexandria that the DASH buses were being rerouted because of this.
personally, i’m tired of being their stomping ground for speeches.

    • SouthArlJD

Um, yeah. Well you ARE in the backyard of the nation’s capitol and that’s how it rolls for everyone. Personally, I always get a kick out of seeing the motorcade.

      • ArlForester

Me too, no matter who is in office.

    • doodly

Most people wouldn’ t live and work here if it weren’t for the government being here. It’s worth a few bus reroutings.
