(Updated at 9:55 p.m.) After months of campaigning, four local Democrats are declaring victory in tonight’s primary election.

Arlington County Board member Barbara Favola has decisively won the acrimonious race for the 31st District state Senate seat. With all precincts reporting, Favola has captured 65 percent of the vote to Jaime Areizaga-Soto’s 35 percent. Favola will face a well-funded Republican challenger, Caren Merrick, in November.

Del. Adam Ebbin, meanwhile, has squeaked by Alexandria City Councilman Rob Krupicka in the three-way race for the 30th District state Senate seat. With 98 percent of precincts reporting, Ebbin has 39 percent of the vote to Kupricka’s 36 percent and Arlington school board member Libby Garvey’s 25 percent. Ebbin will face Republican hopeful Timothy McGhee in November.

Alfonso Lopez will be the 49th District’s next House of Delegates member, succeeding the victorious Ebbin. Lopez defeated Stephanie Clifford 66 percent to 34 percent with all precincts reporting. Lopez will be running unopposed in the fall.

Finally, Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Theo Stamos will be getting a bigger office. Stamos handily fended off defense attorney David Deane in the race for Commonwealth’s Attorney in Arlington. Stamos captured 82 percent of the vote to Deane’s 18 percent. Stamos does not have a challenger in the general election.

Arlington elections officials say that 10.3 percent of the county’s active registered voters cast a ballot during today’s election.

“Not so bad for [a] predicted slow primary day [with an] earthquake,” officials said via Twitter.

The results are a little shaky.

  • Just Me

The earthquake made me forget to vote and when I remembered it was 6:50, no way to get there in time.

  • Jack

Just got an email from Arlington County at 9:40 pm saying “If you smell gas, leave the building or area and call 9-1-1 immediately …If you think you have an unsafe condition, evacuate the building and call 703-558-2222.”

    Almost 7 hours too late

We all look forward to Jaime, Shayna and David to step up with full-throated support for Barbara. That’s what you do as good Democrats.

Of course, it should be Janet Howell, an incumbent, taking on Caren Merrick. Major failure of courage on Howell’s part there.

    Congrats Barbara!

What if it smells like a sewer?

    • Sean

Your drain traps might have become empty. If you can figure out which drain the sewer smell is coming from, you should pour some water down there to refill the traps. If it’s a drain that you never really use, like a basement sink, you should either run the water periodically or consider plugging the drain.

If you don’t know what I mean by a “trap”, it’s the U-shaped pipe under your sink/shower/bathtub drains. Your toilet has a trap, too, as does the drain on your basement floor. All traps in your home should be filled with water at all times. The water in the trap is what keeps the sewer gas from entering your home.

I think she is Justin Trawicks Aunt.

  • G Clifford Prout

Wow. Mr. Pumpkin-face never had a chance did he?

  • mapchick

I suppose this means the daily campaign mailings will stop. Thank goodness, I was starting to really feel sorry for all those trees.

    • Hattie McDaniel

Not to mention the incessant phone calls.

      • Lee-n-Glebe

I assume it also means that all of those campaign signs will be removed from medians? I mean, I wasn’t really sure who I was going to vote for for a while, and there I was sitting at a light when suddenly the 32nd Theo sign in that particular median turned out to be the deciding factor. If she had only had 31 signs there, I would not have voted for her.

  • Garden City

This actually is a good thing. If we, the voters. do it right, we can get some new blood onto the county board. And I mean new blood — not whomever the Democratic establishment selects as her replacement. Maybe Jaime should run for CB. At this point, I’d probably vote for him.

    • Bluemontsince1961

@Garden City, I agree that we need new blood on the County Board and not someone the establishment selects.

  • Mertz

Why would a candidate who lost in state-level elections in Alexandria and Fairfax think she could win against two elected officials with proven abilities to get out the Democratic vote in those areas… doesn’t say much about Libby Garvey’s thought processes or Patsy Ticer’s standing in her own electorate. All Libby Garvey did was pull votes away from Ebbin. She never stood a chance of winning.

    • alebt

Please give me your track record at predictions….in Jan 08 you thought Obama would win?? If so, congratulations. If not, be gracious in not assuming who will win or not until the votes are counted. And BTW, you have received 25% of your neighbors votes for what exactly? If you have not had the courage to run, button it on this topic.

  • Ebbin fan

Congratulations to the best qualified candidate in the Virginia Senate 30th District. Krupicka would have also been a great State Senator, but Ebbin has the proven abilities to be successful in Richmond for his constituents. And I agree with Mertz, why would Garvey think she could win against those two? good grief.

  • ClarendonGUY

    Both dem candidates Stunk.

  • Newtdog73

    Go Caren!

  • DD

    Do we have recall power?
