SoberRide Active for Halloween — The regional SoberRide program will be offered Saturday night/early Sunday morning. Halloween partiers can call 1-800-200-TAXI (8294) between 10:00 p.m. on Saturday and 6:00 a.m. on Sunday to get a free, safe ride home — up to a $30 fare — in Arlington, Alexandria, D.C., Fairfax and most other surrounding jurisdictions. Arlington’s Red Top Cab is not only one of the participating cab companies, but one of the main sponsors of the program. [Washington Regional Alcohol Program]

Candidate Forum on Sunday — The League of Women Voters of Arlington will be sponsoring a candidate forum on Sunday. From 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., the local candidates for state Senator, state Delegate and County Board will discuss their stances on the issues. The forum is being held at the Arlington Central Library auditorium (1015 N. Quincy Street). [League of Women Voters]

Goblins, Ghouls and Politicians in Westover — On Saturday afternoon, the Westover neighborhood will host its own version of a candidates forum. But instead of speeches and debate, the candidates are instead invited to hang out at the Westover beer garden (5863 N. Washington Blvd) and meet and greet votes. The candidate event will take place between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m., and will be followed by the annual Westover Halloween Parade. [TLHCA Blog]

Westover Market — way to go! Hosting a mid-afternoon Halloween gathering in its Beer Garden to meet and chat with candidates.

      Will there be live music?

I’m curious, would the county let the “League of White Voters” use public space for an educating the voters event?

    • OX4

      *Sigh* Really?

    • drax

Isn’t pretty much all of Arlington County a league of white voters anyway?

  • Steamboat Willie

If the League of Women Voters is sponsoring this forum, I hope Ms. Merrick is prepared to discuss her views on clean air protections in this insane anti-regulatory environment that many of her political colleagues are pursuing at the state and federal levels.

As a result of the U.S. House majority’s assault on the Clean Air Act, protecting this 40-year-old law has been a centerpiece of the League of Women Voters’ national messaging push this year.

    • Quoth the Raven

Let’s remember, though, that the weaknes of the Clean Air Act is a result of the hard work of folks from both sides of the aisle. Two key opponents have historically been Byrd and Dingell, who are certainly not Merrick’s “political colleagues”. In other words, blame is very easily shared on this issue.

      • Quoth the Raven

I should have said “Byrd (now deceased)”, just to be more clear!

        • TGEoA

          Deceased klucker

      • Steamboat Willie

Not even close in comparison – a handful of D’s versus nearly every R member of the House and Senate equals shared blame in your mind. Ludicrous.

        • Quoth the Raven

Given the relative power of the two men, it’s not ludicrous at all. I’m not trying to diminish the GOP’s role in weakening the Clean Air Act – far from it. But both Byrd, in particular, was absolutely instrumental in ensuring that the CAA would grandfather in old coal-powered power plants, thereby guaranteeing that we’d spew filthy air for generations.

With all the global warming skepticism nonsense, yes, that’s mostly, if not solely, GOP-driven.

      • drax

Well, then, let’s focus on what the candidates in this race feel about it.

has anyone ever successfully gotten a cab using the free cab ride home service? I can’t even get a paying cab on halloween weekend…
