by ARLnow.com May 24, 2012 at 2:05 pm 3,987 28 Comments

It was tough work but we’ve narrowed down the dozens of entries to our Summer Photo Contest to ten finalists who successfully captured a unique, visually-appealing summer scene in Arlington.

Fire Works Pizza in Courthouse (2350 Clarendon Blvd) is sponsoring the contest in celebration of their new outdoor canopy, which will help keep patio diners cooler when the sun’s beating down, warmer on cool evenings, and dry during summer downpours.

You can vote below for up to three of your favorite entries.

Voting will take place through 2:30 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, May 24). The finalist who receives the most votes will receive a $100 gift card to Fire Works Pizza along with an ARLnow.com tote bag. Second and third place will receive a $50 and $25 Fire Works gift card respectively.

The current highest-ranking photo in the poll is a view of DC… I’m not sure what to make of that.

All very nice photos. I’m interested to see the winner.

Exactly why I didn’t vote for it. Would be a shame if the defining photo of Arlington was a longing look across the river to a different place.

      • whatever

i don’t think it’s longing – you could be in the city in the mess, the mass, of sweaty bodies on the mall.

instead you’re above them, lounging, relaxing, watching the view.

At the risk of being called a curmudgeon, they’re all seriously lacking.

The power lines one is the only one that quickened my heart even a little.

    • CW

I agree. Few of them really contain anything that is explicitly identifiable as Arlingtonian. Most of them look like stock photo art.

      • whatever

        suggested iconic arlington subject?

“arlington next 7 exits” ala corner bakery?

iwo jima, carillon, air force memorial, war memorial in clarendon?

        rosslyn skyline?

        • CW

Any of those would beat generic trees, generic power lines, generic streets…

        • nom de guerre

Sam’s Corner when it is open…..iconic, rare and priceless.

    • no, you’re not the only one. some seriously bland entries. *howls & pops on macro lens for a day in the woods*

    • fauxnews

yeah, no kidding. And Arlington artists/photographers wonder why they’re not featured at Artisphere . . .

At first glance of the thumbnail, I though the “Fair” one was a fetal ultrasound.

    • Bob Marshall (R-Loudoun)

First image taken under the transvaginal ultrasound law. Cool, huh?

      • Tabby_TwoTone

I rarely write this, but LOL.

  • ArlSouth

These are all pretty generic lame photos.

  • Fotoboy

The ” county fair” one I thought had the most interesting and difficult effect to pull off–symmetrical blur action. “Cycling Class” had blur (which looks cool), but that was easier to achieve, by focusing on one rider. (Still a cool photo.) The bokeh in “Ballston Summer” and its composition (bloom off center–good; distant lights in a line–interesting) showed some skill.”Riding in Rosslyn”–unusual perspective–+1.

The Iwo Jima one kind of threw me with the Starbucks cup sitting there. Given the title, a couple of old-timer veterans sipping coffee together at the statue would have been better. Had the coffee cup just been left out, it’d be an interesting juxtaposition of two very different sculptures.

    • CW

With the Iwo Jima, the lens flare was just wayyyyy too much and the fill flash wasn’t doing it for me.

The Ballston one is the best from a technical perspective, IMO, except it seems that the horizon is running away, which is a pet peeve of mine.

Of course, Arlnow only gave two days for submissions, so I guess we shouldn”t be surprised at low quality……

  • SoArl

I voted for the packing heat one just because of the name. Made me chuckle…

  • Trevor Frye

Where’s my picture? Nothing says “Summer” like topless!

  • nunya

damnation how did i miss the post about this contest. i so wanted a free arlnow tote bag!!

  • Dezlboy

The Iwo Jima is the only photo that can be identified as Arlington. But, a pair of brown flip-flops next to the coffee would have helped.

  • Customer

I hadn’t voted yet, but after I did, it said, “Thank you, your vote has already been counted.” How it that determined? Is everyone in my office blocked because someone already voted? Or did it actually count my vote and the message is misleading?

  • Nic

All those pictures are point and shoot, no talent what so ever!
That’s what you get when you give a camera to an Arlingtonian soccer mom/dad, they find their “inner artist”…

    • whatever

a few of them could be, but at least 5 aren’t.

  • Captain Obvious

I’m voting for Morning Coffee. It has in it both a picture of Arlington AND a stone frog!

  • Debi

Oh c’mon folks obviously you know nothing about your local famous hero “Thinking Frog” check it out on Facebook. So TF needs his morning Starbucks, when pondering the enormity of the Iwo Jima Memorial. I think considering that each of the photographers, made the effort to particpate says something positive about your areaa! Good Job. and go “TF”

    • Captain Obvious

      TF is the best.
