(Updated at 11:30 a.m.) At least one northbound lane of George Mason Drive is reported to be blocked at N. Park Drive due to an accident.

No injuries were reported as a result of the two-vehicle accident, but a light pole was knocked down and fell into the roadway.

Police are on the scene. One northbound lane of George Mason Drive may be squeezing by the accident scene, according to a witness. It’s not clear how long it may take for crews to clean up the downed pole.

would have liked to see more blood in the photo.

not surprised. they drive like maniacs there.

Another day, another driver doing something stupid. Glad nobody got injured.

  • cyclist

    Clearly a cyclist’s fault.

People use George Mason Drive to speed from Ballston to Route 50, and I’m sick and tired of it. I don’t know why people like myself should suffer with dangerous roads full of speeding drivers, just so that a commuter can get back to Loudon or Fairfax County a little bit faster.

They should take away a travel lane in each direction between 50 and Wilson Blvd, install bike lanes, and increase stop lights/stop signs.

Actually, Carlin Springs would be the fastest way to get from Ballston to Rt. 50.

George Mason is probably my least favorite road in the county. Nothing on it, low speed limit, high actual speeds, bad view, blind cross streets, etc.

For a long time I was using Glebe to go from north to south (or vice versa) because of a perception that traffic flows at a better rate (fewer slowpokes). But I’ve switched back over to Geo Mason simply because it has fewer lights. It provides a remarkably consistent trip nowadays. But my biggest area of concern is right in this neighborhood – the county will almost certainly have to add a light at Park sooner or later.

      I hope that was shtick.

The bad driver should be required by law to pay for the replacement light pole and the cost of the labor too.

Can you post of a mugshot of the two drivers?

    • speonjosh

Maybe a link to their Facebook profiles as well.

Last 4 words of article would make a great book title: “Up the Downed Pole”. (One could add: “…And So Can You”.)

  • bemused bystander

    No Pole-ish jokes please.

I was running on the other side of the road by Lubber Run Park when it happened; if I had been about 20 feet behind, I would have see the whole thing. As it was, I heard the first crash, and turned around as the second car hit the first, but didn’t see enough to be able to tell the police anything. Fortunately, nobody was injured besides the poor light pole.

I wish they’d add one yesterday. Kids’n’moomiez ditty bopping through that crosswalk to the play park behind LRCC, oblivious to everything, have made me peel my wheels more than once.

    • Skeptical

I mean, a crosswalk at Mason and Park. Meant to reply to comment further up the queue.

        So slow down?
