The Arlington County Police Department has released surveillance footage of today’s smash-and-grab robbery at the Zales jewelry store in the Pentagon City mall.

The video shows four men entering the store, their faces covered by hoods and masks. They then use hammers to smash a glass jewelry case, quickly grab the merchandise, and flee the store. Police say the men made a clean getaway with 27 rings worth $128,000.

Anyone with information about the suspects is encouraged to contact Det. Paula Brockenborough at 703-228-4241 or via email at [email protected] Information can also be reported anonymously to Arlington County Crime Solvers at 866-411-TIPS (8477).

They aren’t very good at the smash part of smash-and-grab.

  • Amused

I never knew those cases had smash-proof (bullet-proof?) glass on them. I bet those guys didn’t, either.

  • Amused

I never knew that those cases had smash-proof or bullet-proof glass. I presume the suspects didn’t know that, either, and never had any intention of spending so long trying to get to the goods.

  • MrsCatalina

That was not quick!! Where were the employees? Inside job?

  • Cashier

Where were the store employees? It looks like the entire place is empty. Where were the mall security guards? Why do we live in a society where people like this get off with just a few months in jail? People like this should be shot in a town square setting.

    • CourthouseChris

Whoa, can you see the future? How do you know their sentence already?

      • Cashier

        I’m a soothsayer.

    • Scott

I respectively disagree that this is a crime punishable by death in a public square.

      • William Stoughton

        How about a bonfire?

Can we at least agree to a public caning?

    • speonjosh

Please deport yourself to Mali at the soonest opportunity. I’m sure they’ll welcome you with open arms.

  • speonjosh

    Where are the employees?

    • ArlingTony

I think we see employees fleeing into the mall in the background. Either that or just passerbys running.

Where were the security guards? That wasn’t a smash and grab it was a hammer-away and grab. I’ve put together bookcases faster.

      • Scott

It took 25 seconds to get past the glass. They were in and out in about a minute. That actually is a smash and grab…

    • Wry

The employees have been trained — as they should be — not to risk their lives and well-being to protect the merchandise.

  • Ralph

Why would the employees risk their lives against 4 criminals, who might well be armed?

  • John Fontain

That’s some good glass they got in that there store.

  • John Fontain

Based on the style of pants and shoes worn, I’ll go ahead and predict that at least two, maybe three, of them aren’t black as the original police description suggests.

    • Andy

I assume by your doubt that you don’t believe somebody in the store provided those descriptions.

    • Fountainhead

Please tell me what type of pants and shoes black people wear so I can turn suspicion away from me if I ever turn to a life of crime. Thanks!

        • Andy

      • John Fontain

If you really are black, as your posts suggests, then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

  • Buckley

I’m no Danny Ocean, but I think bringing more than one hammer to the party would have been part of my playbook on this one.

  • HJ

    Thor is a lefty.

    • Ry

Jack and Coke spat out all over my laptop

  • HJ

The headline is pretty lame. These aren’t suspects. These are thieves. Once apprehended they may be described as suspects.

  • Teach Your Children Well

You can use this as a teachable moment for your kids. First, bring a real hammer. Second, don’t have the lefty be the hammer guy — not too many lefties in the world, so class of suspects is much smaller. Third, read the memo concerning dress: showing up to commit a crime in very uniquely colored jacket is not a great idea nor is the bright yellow hoodie. Fourth, the Pentagon City area is loaded with security camera. Last, when caught do not hire the internet attorney who spends his days here commenting on every topic; you will want a real attorney.

  • awesomepossum

I was hoping the author would use the word ‘brazen’.

  • MissKittenCat

just in time for valentines day

  • Cletus Van Damme

I can only imagine what was going through his head the more he hit the glass and it didn’t break. I’m no detective but I’m gonna guess that this was their first time.

  • Stanley Kirk Burrell

You can’t touch this, you can’t touch this
Break it down Stop, Hammer time

  • bikeme

Let’s all be glad no one shot the store employee this time, ok?

  • fedworker

So any bets on the date and time of day when one of these fools gets arrested?

    • LavGreen

One of them this morning at about 10am. 18th & So. Fern. There were more police there than in a motorcade. Just a guess. Suspect face down in the middle of the intersection, cuffed. Detectives, cops. What, 2 blocks away? Yeah, had to be one of them.

  • Coraline

All that trouble for two cases of overpriced garbage from Zales! 125k from Zales = $125 on the street.

  • BlingBling

Ha ha at the ‘where were the employee’ comments.

The employees get paid like $12/hr and are most likely only getting 20 hours a week. You think for $12/hr anyone in their right mind would risk getting a hammer up side the head?

The $12/hr employee gets exactly what you might think – a pretty face that tells you that $9000.00 rope chain looks great and you should buy, buy, buy!

None of the junk in the display cases is worth 1/4 of what it is marked up to.

    Insurance. ’nuff said.

Unless these guys do something amazingly stupid or get turned in by someone they know, they will get away with it.

  • Johny

Could very well be an inside job or these guys have been casing this place or viewed it one time before. They targeted 2 different glass enclosures which was widely separated. May not be a coincidence. May have held the more valuable rings.

    • speonjosh

Yeah, I think it was pretty clear they knew what they wanted. If the story is right and they took rings, maybe because they are small and easy to carry.

    • Edjey

I think the apparent two smashes are just the same one from two different cameras. It could definitely be clearer.

      • speonjosh

What’s also interesting is that neither angle reveals anyone’s face. All it took was hoodies to defeat the security cameras…..

  • LavGreen

Have you been to the Pentagon City Mall in the past few years? The gangs run the place (watch your bags and your handbags – especially getting on and off the elevators); security and Arlington Police have their hands more than full. I find it interesting that they have decided to ramp up their efforts and just go for the jewelry in the stores. Williams & Sonoma just closed their shop there. I won’t buy anything from the Apple Store there – good luck getting it to your car. You can see the gangs work – the girls look down from the upper tiers, find marks and then cellphone their brotha’s. This place needs to be cleaned up or shut down.

    • Clarice

Lavgreen – you should work for the police! How do you know sooooo much about how the gangs work???? hmmmmmmmm? Or are you just making a bunch of psuedo-racists assumptions based on watching too much television?

      • playa

And exactly what psuedo-racist assumption or comment did LG make, Clarice? I know many gangsta members who are biologically brother and sister.

    • Jennifer

I use the metro stop there and shop there frequently and it is hardly run by gangs. Just because someone is black and male doesn’t make him a gang member.

  • Phil

Somebody didn’t get the memo about wearing black hoodies.

  • Po’ Boy

ACPD should do some “Bait Shopper” stings, officers posing as vulnerable citizens with expensive goods( possibly w/ tracking devices).

Then WHAM! Takedowns and make the arrests extremely public to mall patrons.

  • Ian

I was hoping to see the video of them on the way out smashing though the parking garage gate. That would be more helpful in this case seeing the get away car. That way if we see it we could report it. Its easy to slip into metro and away from the mall its harder to hide a car especially with all of us ArlNow users looking for it. lets see some video of the escape car.

  • Jack

Think having more cops might improve Arlington more than a new trolley line, aquatic center, homeless shelter for DC commuting homeless, Artisphere subsidies….? Yeah, more cops would cost a lot less than those vanity projects, but we could still let the County keep raising property taxes, and just borrow less to use the excess revenue.

  • trivia

They used the same MO as the theft that occured in old town at King’s Jewlry late last year. This was perpetrated by two black guys wearing similar clothing.

May be able to do some DNA testing, though, someone had to get cut handling the glass the way they did.
