Renovations are in the works at the Costco in Pentagon City, possibly including a multimillion-dollar overhaul of the food court.
At a minimum, a store representative told ARLnow, the wholesale retailer is expanding its bakery. A permit application at 1200 S. Fern Street refers to new bakery equipment, as well as a “revised sushi layout” and possible plans for a new deli, new rotisserie, new coolers for meat and produce and “an expansion to the existing electrical mezzanine.”
The cost of this work is estimated at around $2 million.
A second permit application, filed last month, refers to more substantial changes to the Costco dining area. With an estimated cost of $9.6 million, the application references “demolition of existing food court and all associated equipment,” to be followed by “installation of new food court with all associated equipment.”
It’s unclear when these changes would happen. ARLnow did not observe any major signs of work in the food court earlier this week, besides a relocation of the previously nearby membership desk. A store representative was unaware of any plans to renovate that area.
Costco’s corporate office did not respond to a request for comment.
The company’s lease of its single-story building in Pentagon City is expected to go for another 25 years. At that point, the Pentagon Centre Development Site Plan envisions redeveloping 1200 S. Fern Street with greater density.
