A second tennis court, a new lawn and additional greenery are all included in Arlington’s latest plans for improvements to Jennie Dean Park.
Respondents have until Thursday, Oct. 31 to submit feedback on the expansion proposal, which follows a $15.5 million renovation of the 80-year-old Green Valley park in 2022.
The second phase of upgrades will involve the demolition of two buildings: the former site of a dog boarding facility and the building that previously housed studios of the public broadcasting station WETA.
Plans call for additional walking paths as well as more picnic tables and shade structures in the park at 3630 27th Street S.
“This comprehensive vision for Jennie Dean Park reflects the community’s desire for a balanced mix of active recreation, gathering spaces and areas for relaxation, all while preserving and enhancing the park’s natural character,” a county presentation says.
No plans are in place to remove the nearby Weenie Beenie building or the Arlington Heating & Air Conditioning building, the presentation notes.
A feedback form asks respondents about the balance they would like to see between open lawn, trees and wildflowers in planned “casual use space.” It also asks respondents to rank how they would prioritize different amenities, including grills, seating, lighting, bike racks and picnic tables.
A final design for the park is expected to come out this winter, with the Arlington County Board expected to consider a construction contract in the summer of 2025.
