JUST IN: Arlington man killed in overnight crash, 18-year-old driver charged

An Arlington man is dead and another young man has been charged in the crash that claimed his life.

Police and medics responded around 2 a.m. to a crash along the 2200 block of N. Harrison Street, in the Tara-Leeway Heights neighborhood south of Langston Blvd. A car being driven northbound by an 18-year-old Arlington resident struck several parked vehicles and overturned, according to Arlington County police.

One of the four passengers in the overturned car was ejected, according to scanner traffic. Despite on-scene medical treatment and a short drive to a local trauma center, 19-year-old Nicholas Rados was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Rados was a 2024 Washington-Liberty High School graduate who played lacrosse, golf and basketball, online sources suggest.

The alleged driver was charged with DUI/Involuntary Manslaughter and Breath/Blood Test Refusal, police said. He’s being held without bond at the Arlington County jail.

“As a result of the on-scene investigation, alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash,” said ACPD.

The suspect, Brooks Bare, is a 2024 graduate of H-B Woodlawn who played baseball and ultimate frisbee, online sources suggest.

More, below, from a police press release.

The Arlington County Police Department is announcing an arrest in a fatal vehicle crash that occurred during the early morning hours of October 12, 2024. Brooks Bare, 18, of Arlington, Va. has been charged with DUI/Involuntary Manslaughter and Breath/Blood Test Refusal. He is being held without bond in the Arlington County Detention Facility.

At approximately 1:58 a.m., police and fire personnel were dispatched to the 2200 block of N. Harrison Street for the report of a single vehicle crash. Upon arrival, medics immediately began rendering aid to a passenger suffering from life-threatening injuries and transported him to an area hospital where he was subsequently pronounced deceased. He has been identified as Nicholas Rados, 19, of Arlington, Va.

The preliminary investigation indicates Mr. Bare, who was the driver of the vehicle, was traveling northbound on N. Harrison Street when he struck several parked, unoccupied vehicles on the side of the roadway, resulting in his vehicle overturning. As a result of the on-scene investigation, alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

The striking vehicle had a total of five occupants: the driver and four passengers. One passenger was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries and has been discharged. Medics evaluated the other two passengers and the driver on scene.
