A victory by one diver and a second by another helped the Bishop O’Connell Knights girls and boys teams enjoy top-10 finishes at the National Catholic Swim & Dive Championships.
O’Connell freshman Raito Detten won the boys diving competition with a 253.46 point total, as the Knights finished seventh in the high-school meet. O’Connell’s Isabel Smith was second in girls diving, helping her team place fifth.
Other top-10 divers for the O’Connell girls were Catherine Ayers in fourth and Leah Close in eighth. For the O’Connell boys, diver Kellen Colevas was fifth.
A number of O’Connell swimmers had strong finishes.
For the boys, Paul Mullen led the way with a fourth in the 500 freestyle and 11th in the 200 free. Timmy Adye was 10th in the 50 free and 11th in the 100 free, and Graham was ninth in the 100 breaststroke.
O’Connell’s 200 medley relay of Mullen, Adye, Rowan and Jermaine Worthen placed sixth. The 400 free relay was ninth.
The top swimmer for the O’Connell girls was Stella Mastroianni with a sixth in the 100 backstroke and seventh in the 100 butterfly. She also swam on the fifth-place medley relay and sixth-place 400 free relay.
Kalyn O’Hara was eighth in the 500 free and 10th in the 200 individual medley, Elliott Rowan was ninth in the back and 11th in the 200 free, Anna Sullivan was ninth in the breast and Eleanor Wertzler was 13th in the 50 free.
Rowan, Sullivan and Wertzler also swam on the medley relay. Mastroianni, O’Hara, Wertzler and Rowan made up the 400 free relay.
