The Yorktown Patriots dominated the girls competition last month to win the latest in a recent string of state swimming/diving championships.

Yorktown won the 2026 Virginia High School League’s Class 6 state crown with 300.5 points, 118.5 more than the runner-up Robinson Rams, the night of Feb. 21 at the Jeff Rouse Swim and Sport Center in Stafford.

With two of three postseason swimming-and-diving championship meets now complete, the perennial power Yorktown Patriots girls team has one title and a runner-up finish to its credit.

Yorktown won the Liberty District meet for the ninth straight season. A week later, the four-time defending champions placed second in the 6D North Region tournament.

In keeping with longstanding tradition, the Bishop O’Connell Knights are enjoying a strong winter season in girls and boys swimming and diving.

In the busy high-school squad’s past three meets, the girls and boys each won a significant championship, with solid finishes in the other two.

A number of members of the Yorktown High School girls swimming and diving team recently were rewarded as Class 6 all-state selections from their performances during the 2024-25 season.

They helped Yorktown win a third straight Virginia High School League state championship this past season.

Anxiety gave way to confidence as the Yorktown Patriots realized they would win a third straight girls state swimming-and-diving championship.

Yorktown finished first with 288 points Wednesday (March 5) at the Virginia High School League Class 6 state meet, with their rival Battlefield Bobcats second with 252 at the Jeff Rouse Swim & Sport Center in Stafford.

It has been postponed a couple of times due to weather. But yes, the Virginia High School League Class 6 state-championship swimming-and-diving meet is still scheduled.

And one Arlington team is preparing to defend its state crown.

They didn’t win any events, yet the Washington-Liberty Generals placed a solid fourth in the girls team standings at the 6D North Region swimming and diving championships.

The finish, and point total of 217, represented the high-school team’s best finish in years. W-L placed seventh, eighth and ninth the past three seasons.

The Bishop O’Connell Knights swimming and diving teams concluded their winter high-school seasons with third-place finishes at the recent Virginia private school state meet in Stafford.

The improvement in places from a year ago were significant for O’Connell, when the boys were eighth and the girls 16th.

Some 80 members of the Bishop O’Connell High School swimming and diving team, and a few alumni, recently raised nearly $17,000 during a swim-a-thon for Area 26 Special Olympics.

The team significantly surpassed its fund-raising goal of $10,000 by collecting a total of $16,931.

Led by a speedy winning relay, the Bishop O’Connell Knights enjoyed a top finish in the biggest swimming-and-diving meet in the metro area for private high-school teams.

The Knights placed second with 501 points in the girls meet of the Washington Metropolitan Prep School Swim & Dive League (WMPSSDL) championships at the University of Maryland.
