Firefighters battled a large house fire in the Woodmont neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.
The fire scene is the 2900 block of 24th Road N., south of the YMCA gymnastics center. Black smoke could be seen rising from a distance as a result of the blaze.
A second alarm was quickly dispatched to the scene, while smoke overspread much of the neighborhood.
As of 4:20 p.m., flames could still be seen coming from the roof as firefighters conducted ladder operations. The fire is on multiple floors of the house, including the attic, and firefighters were ordered out of the structure around 4:25 p.m., just before a portion of the interior collapsed, according to scanner traffic.
Lorcom Lane is closed between Spout Run Parkway and Nelly Custis Drive, according to Arlington Alert.
The fire department expects to remain on scene for several hours, even with the fire now out.
“Fire is out,” ACFD said just before 6:30 p.m. “Units will be remaining on scene for a prolonged period of time working on hot spots and overhaul. Fire Marshal is on scene investigating the cause.”
D.C. Fire and EMS, meanwhile, helped to staff a fire station in Arlington while county crews battled the fire — a relatively infrequent occurrence.
Arlington County is currently under a Red Flag Warning for the rapid spread of fire due to low humidity and high winds.
Bulk of the fire in the attic has been extinguished. Ladder pipe operations are still being used. Expect a large fire department presence and road closures in the area. pic.twitter.com/etCQxccdDz

DC Fire and EMS is providing mutual aid to @ArlingtonVaFD in the form of a truck company filling in at their station 5 as they battle a 2 Alarm house fire. We always stand ready to provide assistance to our DMV partners, as they do for us. #DCsBravest
