NEW: Firefighters injured in Fairlington blaze

A house fire in the Fairlington neighborhood sent three firefighters to the hospital Sunday evening.

The fire broke out shortly before 5:45 p.m. in a townhouse on the 4100 block of 36th Street S., near the Alexandria border. While battling the flames, a firefighter fell through the floor — from the second floor to the first, according to radio traffic — and a mayday was called.

“The firefighter was quickly located and removed from the structure,” the Arlington County Fire Department said via social media, just after 6:15 p.m. “The fire has been extinguished. Three firefighters are being transported with non life-threatening injuries. No occupant injuries. Fire marshal will be investigating the cause.”

Firefighters from Arlington and Alexandria together battled the blaze. So far there’s no word on a cause and no report of the flames spreading to any of the adjacent units in the building.
