JUST IN: Fire at Liberty Tavern in Clarendon

Firefighters battled a small blaze at Clarendon staple Liberty Tavern this morning.

The fire was reported just after 9 a.m. Wednesday, after passersby called 911 to report smoke coming from the restaurant.

Firefighters arrived on scene and found a fire in the pizza oven that had extended into the duct work and part of the ceiling, according to the Arlington County Fire Department.

Police blocked roads in the area while firefighters worked to extinguish the flames. Ceiling tiles and other material could be seen stacked outside of the restaurant.

As of just before 10 a.m. most fire units were packing up and leaving the scene. The county fire marshal will investigate the cause, ACFD said. No injuries were reported.

Despite the fire, Liberty Tavern expects to reopen later today after health inspections and some cleanup.

“Property damage is minimal,” co-owner Stephen Fedorchak tells ARLnow. “There was a small fire in the exhaust of our pizza oven. Everyone is safe. We will open at some point today and appreciate everyone’s interest and concern.”
