Yorktown girls lacrosse team starts 7-0 despite tough schedule

The Yorktown Patriots’ undefeated season through seven matches is extra-notable due to the difficult schedule the girls high-school lacrosse team has played so far.

The defending Virginia High School League Class 6 state champion has faced and defeated perennial powers like the Langley Saxons, Oakton Cougars, Robinson Rams, Battlefield Bobcats and C.G. Woodson Cavaliers.

In two scrimmages, Yorktown played private-school power St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes and 2024 public-school state-tournament-qualifier Cosby.

Yorktown defeated Battlefield, 14-9, Robinson 14-4, Oakton, 13-10, and Langley 16-10. A recent win was over host Woodson, 20-4. The wins over Battlefield, Langley and Oakton also were on the road, like the Woodson match.

The Patriots’ two-season winning streak stood at 27 through those seven matches this spring. The team finished 21-1 last year.

“We lost a lot of seniors from last season and we have played a very tough schedule so far. We have started out playing very well and are building a dynamic and chemistry we want,” Yorktown coach Jenny Keimig told ARLnow.

One of Yorktown’s most recent matches was against Woodson, also a state champion in recent years. The Patriots took control early, leading 7-2 at the end of the first quarter, then 11-3 at halftime.

“Yorktown is one of the best teams in the state, and we have some young players, so we knew this game would be difficult,” Woodson coach Mike Snyder said.

(He also noted that the game was played the night after his school’s prom.)

Against Woodson, Helene Lydon led the scoring with six goals and one assist. Lila Almy scored four goals and Kelly Keough and Corinne Rigoli three each.

Abigail Benjamin had a goal and two assists, Mairin Almy had a goal and one assist, and Katherine McClellan and Iris Taphorn each netted one goal.

Mila Perez had four assists, Olivia Burgeson two and Bennett Greene one.

Victoria Carcillo and Kelly Brown earned the victory in goal.

Taking draws for Yorktown were Rigoli, Lydon, Taphorn, Mairin Almy and Emme Yoder.

Lilah Dalley and Virginia Beall have been other scorers for Yorktown through seven matches.

Yorktown also routed West Springfield, 17-3, in another recent match.
