It’s a big deal any time a head coach of a high-school sports team is chosen as Coach of the Year.

But two different head coaches from the same school receiving that recognition during the same campaign by separate organizations? That’s a very rare occurrence — but happened during the 2026 spring outdoor season at Arlington’s Wakefield High School.

Sports

Players from multiple sports for Arlington teams received public and private all-state honors for their performances during the 2026 spring high school season.

Leading the way were the three Bishop O’Connell Knights baseball players chosen to the Division I private school all-state first team.

Reaching state tournaments this spring season was something familiar for one Yorktown High School team, but a new experience for a second.

Getting there marked a first for the girls softball team, but was old hat for the previous state-champion boys lacrosse squad.

The Yorktown Patriots have continued as heavy hitters in postseason boys lacrosse action this spring.

With the campaign-ending state tournament still to come, the high-school team already has won a sixth straight Liberty District tourney, followed by finishing second in the 6D North Region competition for the second year in a row and third time overall.

Sports

For five straight seasons, the regular season has unfolded the same way for the Yorktown Patriots boys lacrosse team.

Almost by design, the high-school squad has compiled a losing record in the early going as it plays through a difficult schedule, then rebounds nicely and starts consistently winning matches.

Athletes from three Arlington high schools provided the muscle to unload 2,000 Christmas trees in preparation for an annual fundraising sale.

Members of the Yorktown, Washington-Liberty and Wakefield crew teams, plus the Yorktown and W-L lacrosse squads, were up early this morning (Wednesday) to remove the Optimist Club of Arlington’s trees from three tractor-trailers that had arrived overnight from Galax, Va.

The Yorktown Patriots captured their third state lacrosse title by finishing strong in the championship game.

Yorktown (21-1) won the Virginia High School League Class 6 state-tournament crown in Richmond after rallying to defeat the Madison Warhawks, 16-14, in the final Saturday (June 14) at Douglas Freeman High School.

Sports

With a region soccer championship on the line, the stakes were the highest ever in the most recent meeting between the Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots.

Playing on their home field, the Patriots built a 2-0 halftime lead, then hung on to win the 6D North Region tournament final, 2-1, on June 5.

Sports

On the same cool and rainy night at different sites, the Yorktown Patriots defended their girls and boys Liberty District lacrosse tournament championships with victories over the Langley Saxons.

The undefeated and top seed Yorktown girls (16-0) built a 7-1 lead and won 16-8 on their home field over the second-seeded Saxons. The No. 2-seed boys (10-7) played at top-seed Langley and rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to win 11-10 in sudden-death overtime.

Sports

The winningest season in program history included multiple first-time achievements for the Marymount University Saints women’s lacrosse team.

The Division III squad’s overall record of 17-3 was its best (most wins and fewest losses in a season). Being the top seed in a conference tournament also was a first, as well as winning the title. The Saints’ 12-game winning streak was their longest ever, and Marymount scored its most goals in a season.
