After 1-6 start, Yorktown boys lacrosse team now stands 8-7

How about the comeback of the Yorktown Patriots boys lacrosse team?

The squad battled back from a 1-6 start to the high-school season to even its record and earn the second seed in the Liberty District tournament.

Yorktown won its first-round contest over the Marshall Statesmen, 18-4, to reach the semifinal and improve its overall record to 8-7.

The Patriots opened the 2025 campaign with a victory. Then, as the schedule toughened, the young and inexperienced team lost six in a row.

As the schedule eased and Yorktown improved, the Patriots responded with six straight wins before losing their final regular season match to the Herndon Hornets, 10-9.

The defending district-tournament champion and recent Class 6 state winner is now in the postseason and hoping to win additional games.

“Just because we were a young team, we weren’t going to avoid playing a difficult schedule,” Yorktown coach Greg Beer told ARLnow. “That makes our team better, getting experience against good opponents.”

Yorktown’s six-game winning streak began with an 18-6 road victory over West Springfield. The final three wins of that stretch were over McLean, 13-6, Deep Run, 10-6, and Washington-Liberty, 10-8, in an all-Arlington clash.

Washington-Liberty is enjoying one of its best seasons in years and is the No. 4 seed in the district tourney. McLean is seeded third.

Arlington’s Wakefield Warriors were the tourney’s sixth seed. Yorktown also defeated Wakefield during its winning streak.

In Yorktown’s loss to Herndon, Mikey Cowan scored four goals and had one assist, with Logan Kaetzel and Alex Randisi each having two goals and an assist.

Nate Randles had six assists and four ground balls, Roger Allenbaugh scored a goal, Alex Len gathered five ground balls and goalie Gabe Edmeades made seven saves.

In the win over Washington-Liberty, Randles had three goals and two assists to lead the scoring, with Cowan having three goals. Xavier Alford scored two goals, Allenbaugh one, and Jordan Romero-Gutierrez had a goal and one assist. Single assists went to Randisi, Eli Pilch and Mason Wing. Edmeades made nine saves.

The match was tied at 4 at halftime, then Yorktown was ahead 8-5 after three periods.

The Generals entered the postseason with an 11-4 record.
