Yorktown girls, boys lacrosse teams fall in region-tourney finals

It was a double-whammy for two Yorktown Patriots lacrosse teams in the championship games of the 6D North Region tournaments.

Both lost at different venues in Thursday-night (May 29) action.

The host boys were routed by the Langley Saxons, 15-6, and the girls lost on the road in Vienna to the Madison Warhawks, 12-8.

Both Yorktown teams fell behind early and never caught up.

The results were a bit of a surprise because the Yorktown squads defeated each opponent this season in earlier contests.

In the boys region final, Yorktown (13-8) won the opening faceoff, then little went right after that. The Patriots quickly turned the ball over, had trouble winning faceoffs and keeping possession. Langley led 5-0 at the end of the first quarter, 6-2 at halftime and 12-4 after three.

“Langley has a real good and experienced unit on defense, on offense they shot well, they came out focused and we didn’t,” Yorktown coach Greg Beer told ARLnow.

Mikey Cowan, Nate Randles and Eli Pilch scored Yorktown’s goals.

Yorktown and Langley split two previous matches this season, with the Patriots winning the most recent in the Liberty District tournament final.

The Patriots entered the region boys final having won five straight games by one goal, two in overtime.

Yorktown was 2-1 in the region tourney, all home matches. The Patriots nipped Chantilly, 12-11, in the first round, then Oakton, 7-6 in overtime, in the semifinals.

In the semifinal win, Xavier Alford scored the game-winner in sudden death. He had two goals. Randles also scored two goals and had an assist. Pilch, Logan Kaetzel and Evan Beeman all scored a goal. Jordan Romero-Gutierrez gathered five ground balls and won 12 faceoffs; Beeman gathered three ground balls.

Yorktown goalie Gabe Edmeades made nine saves.

In the girls region final, Yorktown fell behind 4-0 and trailed 7-2 at halftime.

Madison and Yorktown met during the regular season with visiting Yorktown winning, 18-13, in a back-and-forth match.

The loss was the first this season for Yorktown (18-1) and snapped its two-season 37-game winning streak. Yorktown won region and Class 6 state tournaments last season.

The Yorktown girls were 2-1 in this season’s region tourney, routing Chantilly, 19-3, in the first round, then topping Oakton, 11-7, in the semifinals.

Against Oakton, Yorktown trailed by 1-0 and 2-1 scores, then was ahead for good at 6-2 at halftime.

Lila Almy and Lilah Dalley each scored three goals for Yorktown in the semifinal, and Mairin Almy and Corinne Rigoli added two each. Olivia Burgeson scored one and Mairin Almy and Helene Lydon had assists. Victoria Carcillo earned the win in goal.

NOTES: Both the Yorktown girls and boys teams next play in the season ending state tournaments, which begin next week … Yorktown girls coach Jenny Tran earned her 100th career win as Yorktown’s coach with the region-tourney win over Chantilly. Tran has 101 career victories as Yorktown’s coach and 144 for her career, with the first 43 coming when she coached the Battlefield High School girls team.
