A Virginia State Police chase through Fairfax County ended in a fleeing vehicle striking a Metrobus and a minivan near Fairlington on Saturday.
No passengers were on board the bus and the driver was uninjured, while the minivan driver was hospitalized for injuries that were not life-threatening, according to a press release.
The suspect, 21-year-old Cory Michael-Joseph Zufall, was arrested and charged with several felonies. Three passengers in his vehicle were identified and released.
The chase began after a trooper allegedly spotted an Infiniti driving recklessly on the I-495 interchange near Springfield around 9:20 p.m. The trooper tried to make a traffic stop, but Zufall refused, the press release says.
Authorities described a chaotic chase, with the trooper unsuccessfully attempting “a maneuver to try and stop the vehicle” after it exited I-495 at Gallows Road, south of Merrifield. The vehicle then continued back onto I-495 before exiting eastbound onto Route 7, near Tysons.
The Infiniti reportedly clipped the mirror of another vehicle and police again attempted a stop, which was also unsuccessful.
“The suspect vehicle eventually lost control near the intersection of Route 7 and South Walter Reed Drive, striking a Honda Odyssey minivan and a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) bus,” the press release says.
This intersection is on the border of Arlington and Alexandria, near the Fairlington, Shirlington and Claremont neighborhoods.
