The management office for the Fairlington Villages condo association caught fire Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters responded around 2 p.m. to a report of a building on fire at 3001 S. Abingdon Street, near Abingdon Elementary School in the Fairlington neighborhood.
Arriving crews reported heavy smoke and flames. Initial reports suggest that the fire started in the building’s attached garage and spread to the attic and roof.
A large fire department response was on scene within minutes, battling the flames. At least one person was reportedly evaluated by medics for smoke inhalation.
Fairlington Villages is the main condominium association for North Fairlington, managing dozens of buildings and around 1,700 townhouse and apartment units, as well as numerous common amenities like sport courts and pools, on 93 acres in Arlington and Alexandria.
Dismissal of Abingdon Elementary was tentatively put on hold due to the fire, tipsters tell ARLnow.
The fire was largely out by 3 p.m., as firefighters continues to check for hotspots.
“The fire is extinguished and the investigators are on the scene,” Fairlington Villages said via social media Wednesday night. “Once they finish, they’ll release the property to our remediators. Northern Virginia Roofing will cover the holes in the roof and Minkoff Co. will begin interior remediation this evening.”
“The staff will assemble at 9:00 am tomorrow morning to assess the main office (smoke and water damage), internet and phone capabilities,” the organization continued. “Thank you for your continued patience as the matter is being evaluated and alternatives for operations considered.”
Update: Bulk of the fire has been extinguished. Units are working on hot spots, overhaul, and ventilation. One occupant is being treated for non-life threatening injuries. pic.twitter.com/Qbhd46FDZr
