Former CIA officer files as Republican challenger to Don Beyer

A Vienna man who spent more than 15 years working with the CIA and Secret Service is seeking to unseat longtime U.S. Rep. Don Beyer (D).

Running as a Republican, Anthony “Tony” Sabio formally declared his candidacy on Wednesday for the 2026 election in Virginia’s 8th Congressional District.

Sabio, who was born in Puerto Rico but settled in Northern Virginia following six years in the U.S. Navy, will officially kick off his campaign next week, he told ARLnow.

Billing himself as a “battle-tested patriot,” the 50-year-old argues that his life experiences make him a stronger fighter for “everyday Americans” than long-tenured legislators.

“Unfortunately, too many in government have forgotten their duty,” Sabio’s website says. “They’ve traded service for self-interest, leaving everyday Americans behind.”

Emphasizing his background in defense and security, Sabio’s platform includes more support for law enforcement, advocacy for veterans and “rebuilding a strong national defense.”

“Public safety is not a partisan issue; it’s a promise we make to every citizen in Virginia’s 8th Congressional District: that they can live, work, and raise a family without fear,” his website says. “And that promise starts with respecting and resourcing the people who protect us.”

Sabio also lists “putting people before politics” and “strengthening the economy” among his priorities.

The candidate previously ran for a seat on the Fairfax County School Board in 2023. During that campaign, he questioned the school district’s equity initiatives and pledged to “bring common sense back to our schools.”

Sabio is the second Republican candidate to enter the race. He joins repeat candidate Heerak Christian Kim, who has sought the office in the last four elections.

Though a primary election has yet to be formally scheduled, it is expected to happen in May or June next year.

“Arlington Republicans are completely focused on the 2025 election cycle, but I am encouraged by Tony’s candidacy and his effort to take our Republican message to voters across the 8th District in 2026,” Arlington GOP chair Matthew Hurtt told ARLnow.

“Tony has dedicated his career to serving our country, and his message is one that can appeal to Northern Virginia’s rich diversity.”

Virginia’s 8th Congressional District, which includes the entirety of Arlington County and extends from McLean in the north to Mason Neck in the south, has been held by Democrats since 1990. Former Alexandria Mayor Jim Moran was elected to the seat that year, serving 24 years before Beyer succeeded him in 2014.
