Arlington’s surge in property crime during and after the pandemic was the highest in the country by one measure, exceeding large increases in other urban areas.

Between 2020 and 2024, crimes against property — including larceny, vandalism and motor vehicle theft — increased by 60.5% in Arlington, home security company Vivint reported yesterday (Wednesday). The next-highest increase among studied localities was in Chicago (up 56.2%) followed by New York City (up 54.7%).

A 26-year-old has been arrested after allegedly providing fentanyl to a man in Penrose, inadvertently causing his death.

Angel Delcid, of Alexandria, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter through the distribution of fentanyl — one of the first instances of the charge being levied in Arlington after Virginia’s criminal code was updated last year.

Arlington’s commonwealth attorney seeking higher pay for prosecutors this budget season, pointing to increased salaries for police officers and potentially better compensation in surrounding localities.

The proposed fiscal year 2027 budget calls for increasing funding for the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office by roughly 3%: from about $7.7 million to $7.9 million. But Commonwealth’s Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti told the Arlington County Board on Tuesday that prosecutors’ starting salary of $82,000 should be higher.

A man who attempted to rob a bank along Columbia Pike last year will spend nearly four years behind bars.

Steve Jamal Smith, 31, was sentenced Thursday to 46 months in federal prison over the Feb. 25, 2025, incident, in which he stole $711 from the Wells Fargo at 951 S. George Mason Drive.

No injuries were reported this afternoon (Monday) after a vehicle drove straight through a residence in the Buckingham neighborhood.

The Arlington County Fire Department responded to the 400 block of N. George Mason Drive just before 12:30 p.m. after a vehicle accelerated through at least one wall, coming to a rest with its front end in an exterior garden.

A bomb threat — later determined to be unfounded — led to a temporary disruption at the Pentagon City headquarters of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration this morning (Monday).

The building, located at 600 Army Navy Drive, underwent a “comprehensive sweep” shortly after the threat was reported, a DEA spokesperson told ARLnow. It is unclear when or how the threat was made.

The former Bob & Edith’s Diner location on Langston Blvd may not be vacant for long.

Chelsea Market & Deli, which currently operates a location in Courthouse Plaza, filed a liquor license application at 5050 Langston Blvd on Feb. 4. That’s roughly a week after Bob & Edith’s announced its closure on Jan. 26.

A decade-long run for Rosslyn’s Barley Mac restaurant and bar came to an abrupt end yesterday (Monday).

Co-owner Andrew Lewis told ARLnow that he is evaluating next steps for the restaurant that opened in spring 2016 following “leasing difficulties” at 1600 Wilson Blvd.
