A 60-year-old Arlington woman died following a five-vehicle crash on I-495 earlier this week.
Suzanne “Suzie” K. Colbert was the only person killed in Monday’s crash, which occurred near Braddock Road in Fairfax County, the Virginia State Police said.
A Toyota Tacoma struck Colbert’s Scion XB while it was stopped in one of the Capital Beltway’s two northbound express lanes around 3 p.m. The driver of the Tacoma was “unable to avoid striking” Colbert’s vehicle, police said.
Traffic was “flowing at normal speeds” at the time of the crash, according to authorities.
The collision caused the Tacoma to roll multiple times — resulting in a “chain reaction crash” involving three other vehicles.
In photos shared by police, Colbert’s Scion can be seen pushed outside of the express lanes, while the Tacoma settled on top of the posts that divide the express lanes from the rest of the highway.
Colbert and the unnamed driver of the Tacoma, as well as three occupants of two other vehicles, were transported to a local hospital. The other occupants sustained non-life threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by state authorities.
