JUST IN: Man arrested after I-395 chase ends in Shirlington

A Baltimore man is facing multiple charges after a police chase ended in Shirlington late Thursday afternoon.

The chase started on northbound I-395 around 4:15 p.m. after a Virginia State Police trooper spotted a car that had earlier run from Alexandria police, according to VSP.

The suspect vehicle was later found abandoned in a parking garage in Shirlington, having struck another vehicle nearby while fleeing, state police said. That led to a multi-agency search of the area.

“The suspect was taken into custody a short time later with the assistance of Arlington County Police and Alexandria City Police,” VSP said.

The full state police press release is below.

At approximately 4:15 p.m. this afternoon, a Virginia State trooper attempted to stop a vehicle on Interstate 395 northbound that had previously eluded an Alexandria City Police Department officer.  The suspect vehicle refused to stop for the Virginia State trooper, and a pursuit was initiated.

The suspect then abandoned the vehicle in a nearby parking garage, and attempted to flee on foot.

The suspect was taken into custody a short time later with the assistance of Arlington County Police and Alexandria City Police.

The suspect, Rashad Smith, of Baltimore, Md., has been charged with felony eluding, felony hit and run, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
