A woman crushed by a falling tree on Pimmit Run Trail last month was later pronounced dead at the hospital, ARLnow has learned.
The incident happened around 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23, near the Arlington-Fairfax County border. Two people were walking on a relatively remote section of the trail when “a tree fell striking one of the individuals,” U.S. Park Police said.
The victim suffered potential back and neck injuries, according to initial reports at the time.
Fire department personnel staged on N. Richmond Street — one of the northernmost residential streets in Arlington — and along the GW Parkway while conducting a nearly hour-long rescue operation through the rugged terrain, according to scanner traffic.
“The individual was conscious and breathing when EMS arrived on scene but later lost consciousness,” a Park Police spokesperson told ARLnow. “The individual was transported to the hospital where they were pronounced deceased.”
The investigation is still ongoing. Park Police is the lead agency for the incident, suggesting it took place on federal land along GW Parkway.
Authorities have not released the victim’s name. ARLnow reached out to a local business where she reportedly worked but they declined to comment.
