Holiday wreaths are returning to the graves of fallen service members in Arlington National Cemetery next month.
This year’s Wreaths Across America Day is on Saturday, Dec. 13. Beginning at 8 a.m., the annual event is expected to bring crowds around the cemetery as volunteers lay wreaths at thousands of headstones and columbarium niches.
“As we approach our nation’s 250th anniversary, this event offers a profound reminder of the sacrifices made by service members during every major conflict in American history,” said Karen Durham-Aguilera, executive director of the Office of Army Cemeteries and Army National Military Cemeteries. “By honoring the service and legacies of those laid to rest within these hallowed grounds, we inspire future generations to carry forward the values of duty, courage and commitment to our country.”
No vehicle traffic will be permitted inside the cemetery, and the parking garage at the cemetery’s welcome center will be closed to the public except for people with disabilities.
“Visitors should anticipate large crowds and difficulty driving vehicles in the vicinity of Arlington National Cemetery due to road closures,” according to a press release.
Volunteers are encouraged to take the Metro and enter through all four of Arlington National Cemetery’s entrances.
“I am honored to join our visitors for my first Wreaths Across America Day at Arlington National Cemetery,” said Army National Military Cemeteries Superintendent John Knapp. “This cherished tradition brings our community together in remembrance and reflection during the holiday season, and I look forward to participating in this meaningful event.”
