New Year’s brings delays in Arlington trash pickup but extended Metro service

Waste collection will once again be pushed back in Arlington as various government offices close in honor of New Year’s Day this Thursday.

Thursday’s collection routes will be serviced on Friday, and Friday routes will be pushed back to Saturday this week. Parking meters also will not be enforced on New Year’s Day (Jan. 1).

Libraries and all community centers, including Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center, will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday and remain closed the following day.

On the other hand, Metro stations will operate on a regular weekday schedule on New Year’s Eve and will stay open until 2 a.m., two hours later than normal. Fares will be free from 8 p.m.-2 a.m.

On New Year’s Day, however, rail service will operate on a weekend late-night schedule all day, while bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule.

The Earth Products Recycling Yard and the Household Hazardous Materials/Electronics Collection Recycling Center will be closed on Thursday, and courts will be closed on both Wednesday and Thursday.

A complete schedule of local government closures is available online.
