Numerous Arlington athletes earn all-state honors for winter season

Numerous Arlington athletes were represented on public and private “all-state” high school teams for success in the winter season.

In basketball on the public-school level, there was one Arlington player each chosen for girls and boys Virginia High School League Class 6 all-state teams. That hasn’t happened frequently over the years.

On the girls side, Washington-Liberty Generals senior forward Eve Jungman was chosen second-team Class 6 all-state.

Jungman was the Generals’ leading scorer, rebounder and shot blocker this past season. She helped Washington-Liberty win its most games (20-6 overall record) in a single season in program history and finish second in the Liberty District tournament.

Jungman was chosen as the Liberty District Player of the Year this past season. She will play in the Ivy League for Dartmouth College.

Jungman also is a multi-event participant this spring for the W-L girls outdoor track-and-field team.

The last girls player from an Arlington school earning Class 6 all-state honors was Yorktown Patriots’ forward Ana Bournigal, for her efforts during the 2021-22 season. Before that, Wakefield High School guard Summer Matlack made Class 5 all-state for the 2015-16 campaign.

On the boys side this past season, Yorktown Patriots’ senior guard Jake Coulam was chosen second-team Class 6 all-state for the second consecutive season.

Coulam helped Yorktown win a single-season school record 20 games for the second straight year. He led the Patriots in scoring and three-point field goals for two straight seasons.

During the 2025-26 campaign, Coulam helped Yorktown finish second in the Liberty District tournament.

In addition, Coulam was a second-team all-state public-school selection by the Basketball Coaches Association of Virginia.

In boys private-school basketball, three Bishop O’Connell Knights were chosen to the Division I all-state team, chosen by the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association:

  • Making first team was senior guard Darius Bivins, the second straight year he made the listing
  • Chosen second team all-state for this past season were senior forward Justin Edwards and junior guard Corey Dixon

The trio helped O’Connell finish second in the Division I state tournament and with a 23-10 overall record.

In VHSL public-school boys track and field, Yorktown distance runner Theo Wargo and Wakefield pole vaulter Devin Carlson made all-state.

For VHSL public-school girls in track-and-field, Yorktown shot putter Kaiya Ovando and Washington-Liberty jumper and runner Gabriela Netwall were all-state selections.

Chosen all-state in boys private-school track and field was O’Connell sprinter Cameron Bower, distance runner Landon Brefczynski and three O’Connell relay teams.

The 4×200 all-state relay consisted of Bower, Jon Tyler, Alex Clarkes and Tim Robertson.

The 4×400 foursome was Clarkes, Brefczynski, Johnny O’Donnell and Ben Peterson. The 4×800 all-state relay was Brefczynski, O’Donnell, Ryan Street and Lance Jayme.

In VHSL public-school girls swimming and diving, a number of Yorktown team members earned all-state honors.

The individual swimmers in two events each were Lila Sherman, Sophie Fredericks and McKenzie Cory along with Mary Hecmanczuk in one event.

Those swimmers were members of Yorktown’s three all-state relay teams that also included Emory Haynes, Alex Bristow and Jackie Furches. Plus, Yorktown diver Cecilia Yen was chosen all-state.

For the O’Connell girls, Elliott Rowan was chosen private-school all-state in swim and dive as an individual, and was on the all-state medley relay that also included Anna Sullivan, Stella Mastroianni and Ellie Wertzler.

Chosen all-state in boys swim and dive were Yorktown swimmers Manu Maher in two events and Mitchell Robinson in one.

In boys private-school swim and dive, O’Connell’s Paul Mullen made all-state in two races and was a member of the 4×400 all-state relay along with Graham Rowan, Keaghan Fahle and Jermaine Worthen. O’Connell divers Rai Detten and Kellen Colevas were chosen all-state.

Chosen all-state in girls gymnastics was Yorktown’s Teagan Wielechowski on the vault, uneven bars and balance beam, and in the all-around.
