BREAKING: Large brush fire reported near Pentagon City

Firefighters battled a large brush fire today on the 1800 block of Army Navy Drive, in the Arlington Ridge neighborhood near Pentagon City.

Smoke from the fire, which broke out around 2 p.m. Wednesday, could be seen on traffic cameras along I-395. Initial reports suggest that a sizable, quickly spreading brush fire burned a shed, several power poles and a number of trees, while threatening some homes.

A large fire department presence remains on scene, blocking parts of Army Navy Drive. First responders were planning to launch drones to help with the firefighting effort, according to scanner traffic.

As of 2:45 p.m., the Arlington County Fire Department reported that “the bulk of the fire has been extinguished” and crews were working to put out remaining hot spots.

Property owner Reba Raffaelli told ARLnow that she lost a small shed with ladders, bricks and other supplies, but most of the damage was in a wooded area on county property. Her house was left unscathed.

“I’m thankful. Thank you God,” she said, crossing herself.

Raffaelli said she got a call from her neighbor about smoke on her backyard, but at first didn’t realize the scale of the blaze.

The brush fire comes amid warm, dry and breezy conditions that prompted a Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service, warning of an enhanced fire danger for much of the D.C. area.
