Trivia enthusiast from Halls Hill to appear on ‘Jeopardy!’ after years of effort

An Arlington man with a background in trivia game shows will be competing on “Jeopardy!” on Monday night.

Matt Davis, a Capital One banker who lives in Halls Hill, previously competed on “It’s Academic” when he was in high school, and on “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?” in college. He took his first online test to try and compete on “Jeopardy!” 15 years ago, and had auditioned for the show three times before finally getting his chance.

“‘Jeopardy!’ was always the [show] that I was most interested in, and I was really, really excited to get the opportunity to get on the show,” Davis told ARLnow.

Having studied finance at the University of Virginia, Davis sees his greatest trivia strengths in business and economics. In his spare time, he likes to do crossword puzzles, read Wikipedia articles and participate in an online trivia league.

“If you like to run, you want to do the New York Marathon, and if you like trivia, you want to be on ‘Jeopardy!’ someday,” said Davis, who grew up watching the show with his parents in Prince William County.

The episode was filmed back in March and Davis is looking forward to getting to experience it all over again, this time with his family.

“Some of the experience is such a blur,” he said. “There’s some things I haven’t been telling people because I’m not supposed to, but there’s a lot that I can’t even remember. So I’m excited to find out a bunch of things about myself.”

Two other contestants with Arlington ties have competed on “Jeopardy!” in recent months.

In early March, Yorktown High School graduate Quentin Powers made an appearance following his return from U.S. Peace Corps service abroad. He was followed by Lydia Cawley, a 2016 graduate of Washington-Lee High School (now Washington-Liberty High School), that same month.
