Mobile ‘museum on wheels’ makes Arlington stop for Saturday’s history festival

A traveling “museum on wheels” is rolling into Arlington for the county’s signature celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday.

The Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission’s Mobile Museum Experience — a quad-expandable tractor-trailer housing an exhibit titled “Out of Many, One” — will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday (May 9) at Kenmore Middle School (200 S. Carlin Springs Road) as part of Arlington HistoryFest 250. Admission is free.

Touring the Commonwealth since January 2025, the 53-foot trailer houses storytelling stations, multimedia displays and curated artifacts. The exhibit, whose title evokes the national motto “E Pluribus Unum,” aims to broaden the story of the Revolution to include women, Native Americans and African Americans alongside the Founding Fathers.

The truck has already drawn some local attention, having been spotted parked at the Thomas Jefferson Middle School and community center campus earlier this week ahead of its festival appearance.

The free, one-day outdoor event is the Arlington Historical Society’s signature project for the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. It will feature more than 40 exhibitors, the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (“Old Guard”), food trucks and dozens of historical reenactors. Attendees can also pick up a newspaper-sized compendium of 70 articles on county history, marking this year’s 70th anniversary of the historical society.

Plans for the mobile museum’s appearance had nearly fallen through before Del. Patrick Hope (D-1) intervened to keep it on the schedule, ARLnow previously reported.

Event organizers are hoping to catch a break from Mother Nature. After initially looking like a potential washout, the weekend forecast has been trending warmer and drier.
