Madison Community Center will temporarily close beginning in June for a multimillion-dollar overhaul, expected to last for about a year.
The community center at 3829 N. Stafford Street will close on Monday, June 15. Planned upgrades including a new air conditioning system to replace window units, a new roof to address leaks and deterioration, a redesign of the lower level and new ceiling tiles and lighting, according to a county webpage.
Many programs will relocate to other community centers during the renovations, while others will go on pause. Fitness pass holders will still be able to access fitness rooms at other Arlington community centers.
Changes to the lower level of the community center include creating a new multi-purpose room, upgrading the flooring and expanding the wellness room and exercise room.
A community update on the project is scheduled to take place at Madison and online on Monday, June 8 at 6 p.m.

During construction, outdoor areas — including Fort Ethan Allen Park, the dog park, the playground and a glass recycling drop-off — will all remain open. Some areas of the parking lot will be used for construction staging and contractor parking, but electric vehicle charging will still remain accessible except during planned power outages.
Additionally, the polling place at Madison Community Center will be temporarily relocating to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church (4250 N. Glebe Road), while the early voting location will relocate to Langston-Brown Community Center (2121 N. Culpeper Street).
Construction is expected to cost around $6.2 million. Following the project, community members should expect the following changes.
- Programs that were temporarily paused or relocated due to construction will return to Madison.
- Programming will be repositioned into improved spaces that best support the nature of each activity (Ex: Movement and wellness classes will take place in larger, open areas with flooring and mirrors).
- Activities will be better matched to room size, flooring and acoustics to reduce room conflicts.
- Fitness room enhancements will allow for better equipment spacing and user comfort (Ex: stretching, free weights and group movement).
- Improved overall experience for both participants and instructors through thoughtful space planning.
- Improved accessibility and flow throughout the renovated areas.
