The Yorktown Patriots reached the championship games of three post-season girls high-school soccer tournaments this spring, earning a 19-2-1 record.
The most recent match was the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 state tournament final in Ashburn on June 13. Yorktown lost that game, 1-0, on a late goal off a corner kick to the Independence Tigers on their home field.
Just days prior to the state tourney, Yorktown lost in penalty kicks to the host Oakton Cougars in the 6D North Region tournament final. Playoff season opened for Yorktown this spring by winning the Liberty District tournament.
“Early in the season, we saw sparks and we knew then we could make a run for these titles,” Yorktown coach Hannah Davis told ARLnow. “We didn’t get the end we wanted in two of these, but we never gave up. We kept working hard and always gave 110%, and have a lot to be proud of about this season.”

Yorktown finished with a 19-2-1 overall record and only got shut out in one game, the state final. In the postseason, the Patriots had a 6-2 mark with three shutouts. They scored 79 goals and had 12 shutouts.
“We had 16 different players score goals, and that’s insane,” Davis said. “This was an incredible group of girls.”
The winning score for Independence (20-2-1) in the state final came with 6:48 left in the match on a shot that was kicked cleanly into the goal after the ball initially was deflected just a couple of feet away. Yorktown had multiple shots on goal by different players prior to the Tigers’ score.
“We had our chances, but couldn’t finish,” Davis said. “We had a feeling this would be a 1-0 game like this. We played them weeks ago in a scrimmage, so we knew they were good.”
The Tigers also had shots prior to their game winner, with Yorktown goalie Elena Schultz making multiple saves, in addition to an individual early kick save by defender Bella Davis.
Yorktown was 2-1 in the state tournament. The Patriots blanked host Battlefield, 4-0, in the first round, then nipped Fairfax, 1-0, in the second overtime in a June 12 semifinal at Independence.
Against Battlefield, Caitlin Wright had a goal and one assist, Mackenzie Reddan, Claire Scott and Claire Beasley netted the other goals and Emily Miller had an assist. Schultz made two saves.
In the win over Fairfax, Wright scored the goal with less than two minutes left in the second overtime. Bella Davis made a big save right on the goal line at one point during the match.
“In every game, this team always played with so much intensity,” Davis said.
NOTE: The appearance in the 2026 state-tournament final was Yorktown’s fourth in program history. The Patriots won state championships the previous three times they reached the title match — in 2017, 2019 and 2022.
