A driver has died after crashing into another vehicle while driving the wrong way on GW Parkway early Sunday morning, police say.
The two-vehicle crash took place shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday near one of the Parkway’s overlooks in Arlington.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that, for reasons still under investigation, a vehicle traveling northbound crossed into the southbound lanes and collided with another vehicle,” a U.S. Park Police spokesperson tells ARLnow.
The driver of the struck vehicle suffered life-threatening injuries and remained in critical condition as of yesterday evening (Monday), police said.
“Both drivers — the sole occupants of their vehicles — were transported to local hospitals,” Park Police said. “Despite lifesaving efforts, the driver of the striking vehicle was pronounced deceased.”
Initial reports suggested that one driver was pulled from their burning vehicle by a Park Police officer, while the other was trapped and extricated by firefighters after a rescue operation.
Park Police did not comment on any injuries to an officer, although scanner traffic indicated that the one officer was treated by medics on scene for burns.
This crash took place about two weeks after another major crash further south on GW Parkway, which injured six people, including two construction workers.
