Two people suffered critical injuries after a fiery two-vehicle crash on the GW Parkway early Sunday morning.
The crash happened around 1 a.m. in Arlington County, reportedly near the Parkway’s second overlook. Initial reports suggest that one driver was pulled from their burning vehicle by a U.S. Park Police officer, while the other was trapped and extricated by firefighters after a rescue operation.
There’s no word on the current condition of the two victims. The Park Police officer who rescued the first driver suffered burns, according to scanner traffic.
“On August 2 at approximately 1 a.m., U.S. Park Police officers were dispatched to the southbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway for a report of a two-vehicle crash,” a Park Police spokesperson tells ARLnow. “Both drivers were transported by ambulance to a local hospital. The incident remains under investigation, and no additional information is available at this time.”
The incident was first reported by local public safety watcher Dave Statter.
About two weeks ago another major crash on the Parkway in Arlington — south of Sunday’s incident — left six people with critical injuries, including two construction workers.
