Most local-government offices in Arlington and Falls Church will be closed on Monday (Nov. 11) in observance of Veterans Day.
Most offices of the state and federal governments will also be closed. Virginia’s court system, including all local courts, will be closed.
Additionally, public schools will be closed in both jurisdictions.
In Arlington, libraries and Department of Parks and Recreation community centers will be closed, but the Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center will be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residential trash, recycling and organics collection will take place as normal in the county.
Aquatics facilities operated by Arlington Public Schools at Wakefield and Yorktown high schools will be closed. The pool at Washington-Liberty High School will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Parking meters in Arlington are not enforced on federal and county holidays, but all other violations will be enforced. Permit-parking restrictions are always in effect unless specifically noted on signage.
Arlington Transit (ART) Routes 41, 42, 45, 51, 55, 77 and 87 will operate on Saturday schedules. Other routes will not operate. Metro service will operate on reduced schedules.
The county government hosted a Veterans Day ceremony on Thursday (Nov. 7) that can be viewed online.
On Nov. 11 at 11 a.m., the Falls Church Recreation and Parks Department and Greater Falls Church Veterans Council will host a Veterans Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial, directly outside the Falls Church Community Center. The community is invited.
The National Veterans Day Observance will be held on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at Memorial Amphitheatre at Arlington National Cemetery. The event is free and open to the public, and will be livestreamed.
The Nov. 11 date marks the signing of a preliminary armistice ending World War I hostilities in 1918. Observed in various forms across the U.S. since 1919, it became a national holiday in 1938.
The name of the federal holiday changed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954.
