School Board celebrates success of student-athletes in fall action

Arlington school leaders Thursday night (Nov. 14) took a victory lap, congratulating students and staff for athletic achievements during the fall season.

“There’s a lot of great success happening,” Superintendent Francisco Durán told School Board members.

Among the highlights he reported:

  • Washington-Liberty, Yorktown and Wakefield high schools are all sending runners to state cross-country championships.
  • The Washington-Liberty golf team had an individual region runner-up.
  • In football, Washington-Liberty had a 10-0 regular season — its first since 1956 — while Yorktown High School head coach Bruce Hanson recorded his 300th win.

“Football has been really thriving,” Durán said.

Board Chair Mary Kadera noted that Hanson is in his 51st or 52nd year as an educator with the county school system. “Truly incredible. Another record, maybe,” Kadera said.

Board member David Priddy noted that it wasn’t just varsity squads enjoying success. He pointed to the 10-0 season of Yorktown High School’s freshman football program as one example.

And there were other achievements too numerous to list.

“These aren’t all of our highlights. There are many, many more,” Durán said. “A big shout out to all of our athletes.”
