Park Police investigating fatal New Year’s Day crash on GW Parkway

A person died and another was hospitalized after a major crash on the GW Parkway on New Year’s Day.

The crash happened around around 11 p.m. on the southbound Parkway near Roosevelt Island and exits to I-66 and Route 50.

Initial reports suggest that a man in a Dodge Ram pickup truck collided with another driver in a white Range Rover SUV. The SUV driver was pronounced dead on the scene and the pickup driver was taken to a local trauma center after crawling out of the overturned truck.

A U.S. Park Police Public Information Officer said the agency is investigating the crash.

“On Wednesday, January 1 at about 11 p.m., United States Park Police officers responded to a crash involving two vehicles on the George Washington Memorial Parkway in the area of Theodore Roosevelt Island,” the spokesperson said. “One adult was pronounced deceased on scene and a second adult was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The crash remains under investigation.”

A tipster told ARLnow that a woman and her dog were killed in the Range Rover and the crash might be the result of a wrong-way driver. The Park Police spokesperson was unable to confirm either detail, nor whether charges are pending.

“At the completion of the investigation more information will be publicly available,” the spokesperson said.
