APS may consider allowing advertising signage at its sports facilities

Commercial advertising at Arlington Public Schools’ athletic facilities? It may be on the horizon.

The county school system currently bars advertising at its fields and stadiums, but a proposed policy revision could change that.

The change was vetted at a Feb. 3 meeting of the School Board’s policy subcommittee. It is a part of a series of proposed revisions related to external funding sources for the school system.

Some neighboring jurisdictions, such as Fairfax County, already allow for advertising at athletic facilities. If a policy change ultimately is approved for Arlington by the School Board, the specifics would be fleshed out in a future policy-implementation procedure, known as a PIP, by the superintendent and staff.

Current school-system policy allows for paid commercial advertising in student newspapers and other publications, as well as in event programs for extracurricular activities. Those policies are not slated to change.

The school system also allows “private contributions to finance building and grounds improvements directed toward the specific goals and objectives of an individual school or of Arlington Public Schools.” The school system reserves the right to decline any contribution that is offered.
