Twins face off in lacrosse for different Arlington girls teams

There was a game-within-a-game when the Washington-Liberty Generals and Wakefield Warriors met recently in a girls varsity high-school lacrosse match.

In that all-Arlington clash, twin freshman sisters Addison and Emily Schimmel played for opposite teams. Addison was a member of the W-L squad and Emily was in uniform for host Wakefield.

The two faced off in a match for the first time since they started playing the sport in kindergarten.

Washington-Liberty won the match in a blowout, 20-5.

“It was really weird seeing Addie on the field, but not before or after the game. I kept on wanting to pass the ball to her,” Emily Schimmel told ARLnow.

Said Addison Schimmel: “It was a little weird playing on opposite teams when we have played on the same team for 10 years now, but it was also really fun.”

Individually, Emily slightly had the upper scoring hand by netting three goals in defeat. Addison had two goals and one assist in victory.

“Watching Emily get a hat trick was awesome. I was both proud of her and mad at her for scoring on my team,” Addison told ARLnow.

Also scoring goals for Wakefield were Natalie Bryant and Juliana Combs.

For Washington-Liberty, Maeve Shoji and Claudia Volpe did the bulk of the scoring.

In one stretch during the match, the sisters were both playing the midfield and got into a bit of a tussle in the draw circle several times, which was a first for them.

“It was fun to compete with her on the draw circle and see her score goals, even though they were against my team,” Emily said.

In the stands, the parents of the twins wore T-shirts from the different teams that a friend sewed together to signal the couple’s “split allegiance,” as their father Bill Schmmel said.
