Update on 3/1/26 — The striking driver has been arrested, Arlington County police announced Sunday evening. The victim remains in critical condition.
Earlier: The westbound lanes of Route 50 are closed after a reported hit and run.
Initial reports suggest that a man in his 30s was struck by a driver near the intersection of Route 50 and Irving Street. The striking vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and the driver fled the scene after the crash, according to scanner traffic.
Traffic stopped and a group of people gathered around the reportedly unconscious man as he lay in the middle of the road. People could see seen checking on the victim and flagging down emergency responders as they arrived on scene.
The victim was taken to a local trauma center with serious, potentially critical injuries. It’s unclear how long westbound Route 50 will remain closed for the police investigation into the crash.
