High-school basketball opponents join forces in all-star N. Va. tournament

Eleanor Mahshie and Eve Yungman are normally rivals on the basketball court. But they capped their standout high-school basketball careers by being teammates on the same squad in a season-ending all-star game.

The Arlington residents and seniors were members of the 6D North Region girls squad in the long-running annual Northern Virginia Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (NVWBCA) Suburban Classic All-Star Games. The two contests — for seniors only — played March 15 at Oakton High School.

Mahshie played her prep career as a sharp-shooting guard for the Yorktown Patriots. Yungman was a dominating center for the Washington-Liberty Generals.

In the March 15 all-star game, Yungman scored six points, grabbed six rebounds and tipped the ball away a couple of times on defense. She made three baskets, two on driving layups and the other a 15-foot jump shot.

Her effort helped the 6D North All-Stars defeat the Prince William County team, 91-58, as the winning squad made 16 three-pointers. The 6C Occoquan All-Stars defeated the Loudoun County All-Stars, 76-48, in the other game.

Yungman will play in the Ivy League for Dartmouth College. “It was fun to play in a game like this, with players being on your team that you have played against your whole high-school career,” she told ARLnow.

“I also got to play some different positions, like point guard for a little bit, which was a lot of fun,” Yungman said.

Mahshie, who has committed to play college basketball at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was kept from playing by injury, but sat on the bench through the entire contest with her 6D North Region all-stars.

Absent the injury, Mahshie would have been one of the favorites to win the three-point shooting contest, held prior to the all-star games.

This past season, Mahshie, one of Northern Virginia’s top three-point shooters, and Yungman each were chosen first-team all-Liberty District, with Yungman selected as the league’s Player of the Year. In addition, Yungman was chosen first-team all-region, with Mahshie making second team.

The Arlington players helped their high-school teams achieve winning seasons during the 2025-26 campaign. Yungman and the Generals finished with a 22-6 record and a second-place finish in the district tournament. The 22 wins were the program’s most in a single season.

Since she was chosen first-team all-region, Yungman will be in consideration for Virginia High School League Class 6 all-state honors. Mahshie helped Yorktown to a 13-10 mark and region-tournament berth.

The two players went head-to-head in three games this past season, with Washington-Liberty winning each time. In the Generals’ district-tournament semifinal victory over Yorktown, Yungman had a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds to go with two steals and blocked a shot.

Fred Priester, the longtime Oakton High girls head coach and NVWBCA president since 1985, organized the event, held for the 21st time. Priester awarded six $500 scholarships to senior players between the games.

Arlington’s Wakefield High School senior forward Dominique Harris was among those receiving scholarships.

“We are very fortunate to have [all-stars] being in our lives and for us to be in their lives,” Priester said.

Other scholarships were awarded to Oakton’s Sophie Toole, Marshall High’s Elisha Williams, Woodson’s Isabel Conklin, Centreville’s Aliza Murray and Edison’s Kennedy Marshall.

The four Most Valuable Players of the all-star games were Murray of the 6D North Region squad, Potomac High’s Miya Semenuk for Prince William, South County’s Laila Tull for Occoquan and Heritage’s Riley Makitka for Loudoun.

Between games, Yungman and others were honored for being chosen district Players of the Year. District Coaches of the Year also were recognized.

NOTE: Players from Arlington enjoyed success in previous Suburban Classics, like Washington-Liberty guard Frances Shapiro last year and W-L forward Malek Ben Hammouda and Wakefield guard Helena Helms the season before that. Shapiro was the 6D North Region MVP of last year’s contest, scoring 12 points.
