Arlington detective named DOJ ‘Hometown Hero’ for child exploitation work

An Arlington detective has been honored by the U.S. Department of Justice for cybercrime work that included helping take down a foreign forum trafficking in child sexual abuse material.

Detective John Bamford of the Arlington County Police Department was named the Eastern District of Virginia’s 2026 Hometown Hero, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced today. The award was created by the DOJ to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence and recognizes a law enforcement partner who reflects “a steadfast commitment to the enduring ideals of liberty, service, and civic responsibility,” according to the announcement.

Bamford works as a detective for ACPD and as a Task Force Officer with the FBI’s Washington Field Office Cyber Task Force. His efforts “have resulted in the identification and rescue of hundreds of child and adult victims,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

The announcement singled out Bamford’s role in identifying and dismantling a cybercriminal forum in South Africa that sold “hundreds of thousands of illicit images” before being shut down. Working with South African authorities, Bamford helped recover more than 37 terabytes — approximately 10 million images of sexually explicit material depicting minors — from electronic devices during a search warrant. He was also instrumental in the prosecution of one of the forum’s most prolific users, whose collection the U.S. Attorney’s Office described as among the “worst” featured on the site.

“Detective Bamford is the consummate law enforcement partner,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in the announcement.

Bamford has been a police officer with ACPD since 2008. In addition to his cybercrime work, he teaches ACPD legal courses and is a member of the department’s Emergency Response Team Tactical Operations Center. He has previously served in ACPD’s Economic Crimes Unit and Civil Disturbance Unit, and as a Field Training Officer and Crime Scene Agent.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Siena College in 2006 and his Juris Doctor in 2010 from George Mason University’s law school.
